venue: Ojai Womens Club date: 9-5-01 bands: Biult To Break, As Begging Ends, BearTrap, Champioon, Fields Of Fire Okay so I had just seen Champion the night before at the same place, but with some different bands, and I was sssooo excited to see them again because they are so good. Anywasy, so Built To Break played first. They are from Ojai CA and all the members in their band are not even in High School! Thats is fucking rad. Now when I review their set you have to remember that these guys have been involved in the hardcore scene for abou 6 months! So their singer is probably not even five feet! They played about 4 or 5 songs, and they weren't all that great but you have to keep in mind that they are only..... 12 years old. To my suprise there was people circle pitting and moshing! It was rad, I was so stoked for the little guys, to even have the guts to go up on the stage and play is amazing, considering that they were playing in front of a decent size crowd. After they finished up everybody was giving them mad highfives! All in all a good job for these new hardcore kids, and I will be looking forward to seeing what these guys bring next. Up next was BearTrap, another hometown Ojai band. There set was kinda short too, but they were bringing all the good stuff, circle pit action, singing along and some mosh here and there. This band will get better and better as they play more and more shows so be watching out for these guys soon. After them was As Begging Ends [or something to that effect] from Oxnard CA formely Good Enough but with one member change. They pretty much play the same style music, poppy melodic punk. So they started up their first song, and something happened and then the mic didn't work, and then it did work, and then it didn't, and it took like 15 minutes to get it to wrk, it was a disaster, and a lot of people left the room. I felt bad for them because they couldn't help it, I would have recomended them to keep on playing without a singer since that was their first time playing at Ojai. But they waited and the microphone started working. They played a really long set, with a couple old songs and mostly new ones. They also threw in a cover of "Big Mouth" by Gorilla Biscuits, and Robert IC and he dedicated the song to someone but I couldn't hear him all that well. Anyways they got a great rresponse for the song! They played a couple more then they covered "In the Balance" by Trial , but it was great because the ex-singer of Trial was there and they had him come up and sing the song. He was kid of reluctant at first but then he got really into it. He explained the song: how people work 9-5 then come home and go to work the next day, and he said that you should just try to make more out of your life then just that, make a band, zine, go to shows, you know get involved however you can[that was a shorter version]. I was just kiind of watching an listening and I was like fuck... hes right you know, people just waste their lives away, kinda thing. But anyways after talking about the song for about a minute or so it started up. There was about 5-6 people singing a-long, I thought more people would know the song, but then the breakdown came FUCKIN MOSH!!! It ruled it kind of fit perfectly being as the Seattle guys were there, Trial being from Seattle and all. SO their set was over kinda sloppy but picked two good covers to make up for it. I can't really say much about Champion since they just played the night before and I'll already reviewed them. They played all the same songs and the three covers I think. The cover off of their CD, I'm not sure who it is but I think Dag Nasty. Then they covered somebody else who I didn't know. After that they covered Chain Of Strength. I am really bad at the names of Cahin Of Strength songs, thats why I never know what songs bands cover from Chain Of Strength. After them was Fields Of Fire, it always seems like Fields Of Fire headlines but anyways, they played all their good ones then some more. I was really tired so I went outside during their set. Good show over all lookin froward to seeing everyone again soon!!! XXX |
