Transmission woes [850][93] ... posted by R Carter on Monday,

My 850 GLT sedan with an automatic trans skips second gear. The arrow light
and the sport button
light are flashing and I have an error code of 1-2-2 that will not clear.
Can anyone tell me what that code
indicates and if this problem may be caused by something outside the transmission
itself?

The 122 code is for the S1 Solenoid, open circuit. In the past the S1 solenoid
has been replaced to fix
the problem, but my experience is that it doesn't fix it for long. Eventually
you will need to put a rebuilt
unit in the car, about 1500-1600 dollars (US). The solenoid is cheaper
(?)and the labor is around 4
hours, but like I said I haven't had good luck with it.

Rich,
Why do you need to replace the whole transmission eventually? What goes
wrong? Please give us your
experience with this.
1-2-2 means electrical problems in wiring or the solenoid itself. I just
had my S1 solenoid replaced last
week (-94 855T 49 kmiles), with a big enough repair bill. The resistance
of the solenoid was close to
the upper limit of 15 ohms although the solenoid seems working OK with
a 15 V power supply. Could
have been just the resistance (in conjunction with bad connection).
Thanks for you assistance!

Transmission Solenoid S1 and S2 [850][1995]... posted by Carlos Quintana

The downshift arrowhead started flashing and the check engine light came
on, the transmission got stuck
on third gear, but the car runs fine the next day. The diagnostic code
is A1-2-2-2. However, the
mechanic tested the solenoids independently, and they are apparently fine,
he couldn't find any faults.
This happens twice, or three times a week. I talked to the Service Manager
from the local dealer, and
he told me that they have replaced several solenoids, but this repair does
not guarantee a solution to the
problem, since they have also replaced several transmissions. My car has
83,000 miles on it, and I can't
think of needing a new transmission.
Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Solenoid S1 and S2" posted by Carlos Quintana.
Considering that code (Solenoid S2 open circuit) and that your tech says
it's now testing OK, I'd guess
then that it's intermittant and still a problem with that solenoid (not
all that unusual). I'd opt for having
someone replace your S1, S2 solenoids as that's far more likely than more
serious trouble.
John,
I just had my S1 solenoid replaced. The car came back and I think the lock-up
solenoid SL now
doesn't work. I think performance is down too (sluggish operation). Mileage
is ~5-10 mpg worse and I
cannot feel the lock-up as before. Test mode 3 on A1 does not produce any
clicks for SL although the
resistance is fine (13 ohms). Should SL click as loudly as S1/S2 ? Could
something have gone wrong in
the repair or did the SL just happen to break now too?
BR,
Jari
Take it back to whoever just replaced the other solenoids. I've never experienced
SL solenoid problems
so far, just seen a few S1/S2s and that's been years too.
