The attached picture is of the car of an acquaintance, who was hit head-on by a four wheel drive pickup pulling a trailer loaded with livestock. I can't imagine the force that the truck and trailer had as they ploughed into the front of the 740 wagon (no air bags). However, air bags wouldn't have helped much in this situation. The Volvo driver had both legs broken. He endured several months of physiotherapy, and is now walking without aid of a cane, and, of course, drives a v70. Notice how the pickup truck wheels are off the ground.
My brother has another "Volvo Saved My Life" testimonial. His 1992 960 wagon was broadsided (passenger side) by a transport that ran a red light while travelling at about 50 mph. Fortunately, my brother was alone. The passenger side was obliterated, but my brother was able to open the driver's side door and step out of the car. As others have mentioned, the police were amazed that he lived, much less walked away. He now drives another 960 wagon. The extent of his injuries were lacerations from the broken glass as the air bags deployed.
