TRANS FLUID FLUSH [850][1993]... posted by BOU BOU on Wednesday, 21 February 2001, at 12:07 p.m.
Gentlemen: I would welcome any and all opinions on the foll: My 93 850
with 143,000 has been a great
car. I have the original trans with (knock on wood)no problems. I've done
the 3-4 quart tranny drain
(not flush)with Mobil synthetic ATF about three times now over the last
year or so. I am contemplating
using the flush method from BAY 13 with Mobil Synthetic ATF; However; a
very reputable
independent trans shop discouraged this practice for the following reason.
There is no filter/screen to
replace or clean and their reasoning is that the detergents in the new
fluid will clean deposits from the
trans and possibly clog the already dirty screen/filter and cause problems.
There seems to be good logic
here. Does anyone have any comments/recommendation on this reasoning? Also,
Mobil Synth ATF is
Compatible with and approved for use where Dexron 11E is indicated. Should
I stick with conventional
ATF or use Mobil Synthetic? I am hoping that the Synthetic has less detergents,
but I don't know. I'd
much rather use the Synthetic. The local Volvo dealership suggested that
I stick with conventional ATF,
but I don't trust that the opinion of a service advisor counts that much.
Everyone has an opinion. I'd
appreciate any comments.
Thanks in advance,
BOU BOU
If you ask me... use conventional ATF ... why wasted the money... others
like fancy stuff.... that ok
too....
flush the fluid used the flush method on BAY 13 work just fine
dealer like for you to give them your money....
I will just do it myself... and take my change....
others who take their car to dealer and still have problem...
Dealer last resource when you screw it all up....
good luck
They are feeding you crap based on old technology.
a) That theory about flushing old trannies and then death was based on
very early GM types. Most with
bands and old tech. stuff. If you have that much crud, you already have
problems. Flushing it will make it
better NOT worse. Besides you've been doing a good thing to put a least
some new fluid in.
b) Synthetic ATF is so far superior to petroleum ATF there is no argument.
Mobil ATF is ok. Amsoil
Synthetic ATF is the best ATF in the world.

Hey Paul,
No offense intended - but specifically in what way is AMSOIL ATF superior to MOBIL ONE ATF ?
I know several posters to this board are AMSOIL distributors - so aside
from personal business issues
- Why is AMSOIL better than Mobil One?
No problem. Mobil 1 ATF is a fine product. You would not go wrong to use
it in a proper application.
Both have HUGE viscosity indexes!!
Amsoil ATF exceeds Mobil 1 ATF with:
1) Extended ATF change interval. Amsoil recommends a 3X lengthing of normal
change interval. Really
important in cars with "lifetime factory ATF fills". Also, the anti-oxidant
and base synthetics can take any
heat and abuse in even big industrial equipment that uses ATF.
2) Antiwear chemistry. Amsoil has less wear in a standardized ASTM wear test.
3) Friction reduction. Amsoil will allow your tranny to run up to 50°F
cooler than standard ATF and
slightly cooler than Mobil 1. Also, makes for smooth but solid shifts.
4) Amsoil is the first and only fluid to meet all the big three ATF requirements
in the market. Including
Chrysler ATF +4, a new rather demanding specification. On the other hand
it meets Ford type F
requirements as well.
5) While both fluids maintain viscosity quite well Amsoil has a better
flow properties at low temps.
(-69°F)
And while not scientific my neighbor's tow rig that would fry dino ATF
in 1/2 of one tow season, before
I moved in tried Mobil 1 ATF, lasted a bit longer but got weirdly oxidized.
I asked him to try Amsoil
ATF (at my cost, hey I gotta live next to the guy). Anyhow, he towed his
trailer to Arizona last July
and he still has the same fluid - it looks new!!!

Well, for starters---since you have done the partial flush with Mobil 1
synthetic ATF 3 times already,
most of the fluid in your transmission is already synthetic.
However; a very reputable independent trans

Obviously, this is totally inappropriate, since you have no deposits in
the transmission because you have
been using the synthetic ATF.
> Should I stick with conventional ATF or use Mobil Synthetic?
Well, if you don't take Paul's recommendation to change to AMSOIL ATF, then stick with the Mobil 1.

Good thinking. They obviously don't understand synthetics.
Above comments based on use and selling of synthetics (AMSOIL) for almost
25 years, and use in
Saabs for that long, Volvos since about 1988.
