Tranny fluid change;
can you insert fluid via the top of the ATF cooler?

Michael,
Well, the flush is done.  I ended up doing it your way (fill through the dipstick tube).
First I tried to get new AFT (Mobil 1) through the cooler connection but without much luck.
1/2" ID plastic tube fits well inside it and just to make things more leak proof I wrapped electrical tape around the connection.
I was hoping that the new AFT would be sucked into the transmission and this way equalize the flow in and out.
Unfortunately, that's not the case.  My understanding is that the AFT is being forced through the cooler without any
suction (drains to the transmission?) and this is the main reason why I could not fill as fast as the fluid was being pumped out.
And filling through the connection was even slower (flow restriction device?) than through the dipstick tube.
So, I switched to your method and it worked great.

The car has 100,000 km (98 V70 GLT), I bought it used with 36,000 km in February 2000(probably city driving) put another 64,000 km of mostly (90%)
highway driving since.  So the transmission doesn't work all that hard but never the less the AFT coming out of the transmission was exactly like
yours, dark brown.  However on my dipstick it still looked reddish.  But what a difference when I got it outside.  Probably the yellow dipstick
shifts the hue.  BTW, I change my engine oil (only Mobil 1 or Castrol Synthec) at 8,000 km and the impression is the same, oil looks OK on the
dipstick but is dark and brownish when drained.

I used up 13 litres of Mobil 1, it cost me approximately CAN$100 and I treat it as a cheap insurance.
Thank you for your great website and good luck.

Thanks for the info Janusz, sorry to hear that the cooler method didn't work.
I'll get around to archiving your effort onto the website for further reference.

By the way, to do mobil 1 synth ATF change here in Aust. it will set us back
around $350 AUD. Ouch, even in USD thats about 170+. Hence I still use dino!

Well, what a difference in shifting!  Much, much smoother, now I can hardly
notice a gear shifting.
BTW, the most convincing argument for flushing I got was from comparing
transmission fluid with power steering one.  Both systems are using the same
AFT and the colour difference was huge before the flush.  Even with 100,000
km the fluid in the power steering was light red (does not get that much
work out) while the tranny was much darker.  I guess one could use this as a
test even when the tranny fluid still looks OK on the dipstick.
Here in Canada a dino AFT goes for around CAN$3 toCAN$4 per litre while
Mobil 1 and Castrol Synthec AFT costs CAN$7 to CAN$8 per litre.
