Take my time you said!, well theres a bit of a story to tell so ok!
I don't have much going for me at the moment! One i'm Australian
which is cool but it doesn't encourage
my addiction. Those are two words which in my lifetime I would
like to see a little closer together, see
Australians for some reason think Volvos are slow, ugly, rich
people cars which should not be allowed to
be driven on our roads, I too was a believer of this until 93'
when my family's Holden got stolen and
trashed we were not too well off and to my fathers disgust he
could only afford to buy an 82'244GL.
Australians are so to speak two car people -you're either a FORD
man or a HOLDEN man and this is the
way it has been for ever over here HOLDEN is the australian division
of GM built and designed here
by us and ford are the american cars built and designed here
by us.
Well it was the family car for about 2 years until it blew number
3 spark plug out of the head. So it sat
down the end of our garage waiting for dad to bring it back to
life while we moved in to our second
volvo which was another 82' 244GL this one was Yellow we drove
it until 97 when i got my licence and
it became my first car.
Once i got my hands on it it lasted 5 weeks before i was hit by
a drunken driver traveling at 80/kmh
while i turned a corner he hit me dead centre on the passengers
side B pillar and spun me through the
intersection in to a side street where a 4WD ran up my ass. The
car was a write off but the thing that
amazed me is that i climbed out with out a scratch and ran straight
to the guys car who hit me! He was
driving a Subaru wagon about an 80 model well the gear box had
been pushed up into the cabin almost
pinning him in the car. his car was totaled the roof was buckled
and all of the glass had popped from the
impact. I at this time still didn't know that i had been hit
up the ass and i hadn't seen the damage to my
car so i ran back to the car to get my phone i noticed the passenger
side seat to be hard up against the
drivers i saw the rear window was missing but the front was intact
and it was then i found the car was
still running and the CD player was still going playing the song
"Alive" by Pearl Jam. I walked round the
passengers side as i rang 000 and saw what had actually happened
the impact had destroyed the
passengers side from the front door back and round on to the
boot the roof had buckled and the
transmission tunnel had collapsed the diff housing was bent and
the boot was kinked up but still locked
(it can still be opened and closed with the key)
so as i was calmly telling the operator that there had been an
accident i passed out from shock.
When i came to my parents had arrived at the scene the police
officer who showed up first had taken
my phone and searched through it finding HOME written there he
rang the number and got them there i
took a breath test and cleared that but the driver of the wagon
ringed in at 0.06 and our states limit is
0.05.
The police woman i spoke to as they hauled my wreck on to the
tow truck said had i of been driving
any other car in that age bracket i would have been very seriously
injured or killed but what really got
me was that if i had a passenger in the volvo they would have
climbed out ok too but if i was in
another car they would be dead!
I still have the wreck in the side yard my father uses it for
parts on his first volvo hes got my motor and
transmission and i use it for parts on my 79' 244GLE which i
am rebuilding with a little australian twist. I
also own a 75' 242DL which sits out the front of my house waiting
for the 79 to run so it can get
another chance at life.
SO as you can see i am a little addicted to the Swedish brick
which puts me in a little bit of a bind as i
work as a mechanic for Ford I love Volvos and i'm australian
which means i should own a Holden.
But i said stuff them all i personally started to bring the words
Volvo and australia together with my 79'
it has a HOLDEN 202 blue motor and three speed trans in it now
and is only weeks off hitting the
roads to stick it to the Volvo haters!
