glove box lock f****d up... [850][93]... posted by Adam Z  on Wednesday, 14 March 2001, at 6:07 p.m.

I have just taken apart my locking mechanism after finally getting my broken lock undone...the tiny metal
pin that pushes the "latch" open to release the door of the glove box has snapped off...it appears to be
made of the notorious white metal, so any spot brazing or welding-type things are out of the question.
So before I call the dealer and order a new one, anybody have any suggestions?
                      All input is greatly appreciated
                      thx,
                      Adam

I just did the same thing. Got the kit from the dealer. I think it was about $60.00. You can buy the wire
bail seperate. But, looking at the broken piece of the lock I figured I could drill a hole through the piece
and thread a small screw through it so it stuck out like the little piece that broke off. hold the screw in
with lock tite. cut the head off flush. should last forever.

                      Thanks Steve, I was thinking that way myself, but wondered if anyone had tried it...I'll give it a shot :}

I did exactly what Steve described over a year ago and it has held just fine. Just be
careful when you drill the hole out. I ran a thin tap, then epoxied a little screw and
ground the screw head off afterwards. (or more precisely, I used a dremel tool to
cut the head off with a mini cutting disc)

Probably not the most cost effective solution if you're paying someone to do it! But
it took me a half an hr. and saved me having to drive 70 minutes each way to the
                  nearest dealer.

                  Good luck
