Hi, I'm writing for two reasons.  I need help trying to locate the dummy plug and harness that terminates behind the battery as detailed in the Tony
Giverin write up on fog lights. I stopped just short of removing the airbox due to running out of time.  Perhaps you could post this in an edited form
and get some responses.  As I'm writing this I'm speaking to my local Volvo dealer who is telling me some of the 96 and 97 850s did not come prewired
and in which case they'll sell me another harness for $40.00.  I imagine that will take me to just behind the battery.  I'll actually see if I need it or not but my mechanic could'nt find it either.  The other point is the redundant part nos. in the write up.  The relay harness part no is correct, the relay part no is 9494424 however, in case you want to keep your posting correct.

the progress of this thread can be monitored locally (as the brickboard link is now dead.)

Fog Light Kit?[850][1995] Tony -- Wednesday, 18 April 2001, at 1:19 a.m.

Does anyone know where I can get a fog light kit for a 1995 850. I am having no luck, it does not have to be oem, just a nice one. Anyone info would
 help.

Well the OE should easily be available from your local Volvo dealership.

And ANY foglight small enough to be custom mounted in the ports of the front "skirt" of your car should work.

Do you want foglights that will actually function as foglights were intended to? Or are you just looking for looks?

PIAA makes some pretty intensely bright foglights that are pretty small that should fit in the openings. The OE looks great, but isn't all the functional.

 Tony,
The following article was just published in the latest issue of "Rolling" magazine. Hope it helps...

850 – FOG LAMP INSTALLATION

Early 850s were criticized for the lack of power emitted by the factory fog lamps. Whether it was the wattage or lens design, the end result was the
disappointing effect of the lamps. Not to be confused with driving lamps or auxiliary lamps, fog lamps are designed to direct light directly in front of the car
at the same time spreading the light to the sides. This in turn illuminates the road markings which become hidden in dense fog. Installing aftermarket fog
lamps on the 850 is made easy due to Volvo providing pre-wiring from the dash to front of vehicle.

Running from the underdash and arriving behind the battery is a harness specifically available for fog lamp installation. I installed “Maxim” fog lamps that
are oval in shape and output 55 watts of white light. You will need four additional parts for the installation that are available from you local dealer. They
 are:
1) Switch, PN 9128536 @ $37.21
2) Relay, PN 9494424 @ $37.81 (thanks to billy ray - the redundant part number 9134580 that was previously listed here is to be ignored)
3) Relay Harness, PN 9134498 @ $28.31
4) Lamp Harness PN 9134580 @ $37.81.

When purchasing your aftermarket lamps you will find that there is a wide choice of makes, styles and colors available. Everybody from department
stores to auto specialists sell lamps ranging from $50 to $300. My advice is to pay attention to the quality of the housing, bulb type, and ease of bulb
replacement. The “Maxims” that I purchased are made of steel, have a clear lens (white), and use the popular H3 55 watt bulb. The type of bulb is
important as some manufacturers use odd bulb designs that are later hard to find and replace.

Begin by locating the prewired harness running from the under dash to the front of car. Inside the cabin, remove the knee bolster and search for a bright
yellow multipin connector hanging near the relays. This is where your relay harness plugs into. The other two ends of the relay harness are for the switch
and the relay. Where they connect will be obvious. The switch is intalled next to the headlamp switch. Remove the blank cover by popping it out and snap
the fog lamp switch in its place. On my ’94 the blank cover took up two spaces and I had to purchase an additional single space cover to fill the remaining
gap. The relay just hangs in the air off the harness, so I tucked it up into the dash where it remains secure. If confident you can now return the knee
bolster or wait till the installation is complete in the event you need to return and check your connections. Under the hood behind the battery you will find
the other end of the pre-wired harness. There is a dummy plug that needs removing and is a good indicator that you have found the right harness. The
lamp harness plugs into this location. You will also find a ground connector hanging from the lamp harness. The female spade plug connects to any of
the available male plugs that are part of a ground rail found at the same location behind the battery.

I ran the lamp harness down to the front spoiler, feeding the harness through available space found next to the radiator. The fog lamps were screwed to
the under side of the front spoiler in the spaces found either side of the licence plate space. You have some flexibility here to choose your own location.
Keep in mind that you need access to the bulbs when they need replacing. This alone narrowed my own choice and pretty much dictated where the
lamps were going to be installed. The lamps then plugged into the lamp harness. Finally the lamp harness was tucked up into the spoiler and held in
 place using cable ties.

With the installation complete, my fog lamps work independently of my headlamp switch (yours may differ) and the off/on switch illuminates and dims with
the rest of the instrument panel giving a complete OEM fit and finish. Special thanks to Joe Nash at the parts counter at Volvo Villa, Hwy #7, for his advice
 and valuable suggestions for installation.

Re: Fog Light Kit?[850][1995] derspi -- Wednesday, 18 April 2001, at 10:30 a.m.

Depending on your situation, you may be able to get away with not buying a secondary switch to turn your fog lights on and off. On my 95 850 turbo,
there was already a foglight switch located next to the dimmer switch which controlled the single rear foglight--I ended up tapping my front fogs to that
switch as well. Works fine and I only need to hit one switch to turn on both front & rear fog lights when the fog rolls in.

Are these the same "fogs" that come with the S70? I've heard the ones on the S70 are VERY powerful. Maybe those are DRIVING lights I'm thinking of?

front foglight installation question[850][9697]     michael in sydney -- Sunday, 1 July 2001, at 7:55 p.m.

In repsonse to my duplicate of a posting on the installation of front foglights (http://au.oocities.com/ozbrick850/lighting-ffogs.html),
someone just emailed to me regarding a problem (and a part number change) when installing front foglights. The entire msg is on the above
link. In the msg they stated:

"I need help trying to locate the dummy plug and harness that terminates behind the battery as detailed in the Tony Giverin write up on fog
lights...As I'm writing this I'm speaking to my local Volvo dealer who is telling me some of the 96 and 97 850s did not come prewired and in
which case they'll sell me another harness for $40.00. I imagine that will take me to just behind the battery."

Can anyone who has done this mod (maybe Tony himself?) give us a bit more info?
 thanks

If you do have the harnesses already installed they should be located on either side of the car attached to the bumper. You should be able to
feel around for them but it will probably be easier to lift the car and look for them.

 Michael,
I'm surprised that some models do not have the pre-wired harness...news to me! The article which was posted in both the CVC and VCOA
newsletters had duplicate part numbers as supplied by Volvo. I have since received an e-mail from an individual who gave the correct part# for
the relay. The part number should read, 9494424. I'm not clear on your original question, what specific problem are you having?

Re: front foglight installation question[850][9697]   billyray -- Monday, 2 July 2001, at 11:14 a.m.

 Tony Giverin
I posted in the Aftermarket Forum on the duplicate part nos. I also wrote to Ozbrick. The Volvo dealer in my area tried to pass it off as a type o
and told me I didn't need it. I ended up going there and looking it up myself with the help of the general manager, an old high school friend.
Anyway, there is no harness as described to be found in my car, on either side, anywhere under the hood. Volvo reported that some 96 and 97
850s were not pre wired but could not tell me why,(same dealer). So, There is one more harness I need that will get me to the area of the
battery that I ordered and will be getting tomorrow, it cost $33.00 (US). I don't have the part no. now but will post it after I pick it up in the event
you or anyone else may need it.

Hi Michael,
I'm writing back to you again hoping you might have an email address that I
could reach Tony by.  I thought maybe he could help and I really didn't want
to continue to post the matter although I may have to.  I have yet to get my
fog lights working, having a couple of small uncertainties still.  first
off, the relay harness p\n 9494424 that I bought has all the connections
Tony described plus one more, in my case.  It is black about one inch sq.
and multi-pin.  Knowing how Volvo likes to keep their colors the same in
terms of matching plugs up, no where under the dash can I find the black
mate.  I have found a green and a white plug just about on the firewall
under the brake pedal that the both of them look like either one would be
it, for this 4th connection from the purchased harness.  Also, when I
removed the blank cover plate just to the right of the rear fog light
switch, there was a connector for the switch right there?  Lastly, the lamp
harness p\n 9134580 Has a single plug on one end and two on the ends that
would take you down to the fog lights.  In trying to locate the plug behind
the battery I came to realize, (thanks to the online Volvo community) that
the plug I was looking for might be found tucked up into the front bumper,
indeed it was, two actually, one on each side.  these plugs are the same as
the plugs on the lamp harness, all are female! I tried to trace these two
seperate lines back but have yet to be able to find them back to the source.
The single plug end of the lamp harness probably would have plugged into
the the plug that Tony described as being near the battery.  My point being
or my question is now, I'm wondering if the car is pre-wired to the point of
needing to have just the dash switch put in place and the lights connected
up in the front?  I thought yourself and Tony may find this interesting as
well as maybe offer some suggestions.  I may just try the simple approach of
the switch and lights and see if they work.  If I actually have to use the
relay harness then The mystery connector issue still remains for me.
Thank you also for how you handled my previous concerns, you run your web
site very professionally, it's nice to see.  I noticed also that Tony edited
his write up, what a pro.  It's a nice feeling to encounter these sort of
things on line.
Perhaps maybe you could just forward this long winded, (sorry) letter to
Tony.
Thanks again,
Bill

to be continued...
