reset the service light
on 1995 or earlier 850s

Re: Help with service light[850/1995] posted by Leo Montreuil on Wednesday, 6 May 1998, at 8:05 a.m.

If your car is a 1995 or before you can reset the service reminder this way:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Procedure for Zeroing Service Reminder Indicator]

1) Turn ignition on [do not start engine].

2) Select position 7 on Diagnostic Connector A [you'll find the diagnostic
box by the left headlamp under the hood...pop the cover off and plug the
fly-connector into slot 7].

3) Depress the button four (4) times, shortly but distinctly.

You now have entered test mode 4.
When the LED emits a steady glow, system is ready to accept code.
Code 1-5-1 = zero service timer
[AllData refers to each sequence of button presses as 1 digit]

4) Enter first digit [1 press] while the LED is still glowing. Wait until
LED starts to emit steady glow again before entering second digit [5
presses]. Repeat procedure for third digit [after the five presses wait for
the steady LED glow again and then press the button one final time].

5) Wait for confirmation from control module by LED giving a couple of
rapid flashes. Zeroing is completed and Service Reminder Indicator is Off

[6) Switch OFF the ignition to exit the manual input mode, replace the
fly-connector in its holder and refit the diagnostic unit cover.]

[7) Switch ON the ignition again and check that the service reminder light
does not illuminate.]

The indicator lamp illuminates for approximately 2 minutes each time the
engine is started until service has been performed and counter reset.

Reset Service Reminder Light[850][1994] Craig -- Saturday, 24 March 2001, at 3:46 p.m.

I tried using a procedure for resetting the service reminder light on my 1994 850 that I got from this message board (Service light reset - posted by Leo
Montreuil on Friday, 2 January 1998). The procedure indicated that for 850's though 1995 it was possible to reset the light from the Diagnostics connector
under the hood without a special tool. Unfortunately, when I put the jumper into socket A-#7 and pushed the button 4 times as instructed, the LED never
came on to indicate that the system was ready to accept a programming code (151) to reset the service light. Did I do something wrong, or was the
 procedure incorrect?

Look at your instrument cluster and at the bottom, center left, you more tha likely have a small rubber gromit, pull the gromit out and then push in the button
in back of the gromit. The procedure you tried above is if you have a VDO instrument cluster (most are), if you don't then the rubber gromit is on the
instrument cluster for service light resets.

A limmited number of non turbo 94 and 95 850's have a reset button in the face of the instrument cluster. There is a rubber plug just left of speedo in the
glass. Remove the plug and press the button behind it.

I've seen some detailed instructions on the list regarding resetting the
service light on the 1994 and 1995 850s. All were good. A very simple
set that was provided to me goes like this.

 1. Turn on the ignition to the KPII position so the warning lamps on
the dash are illuminated. Do not start the car.
 2. Open the hood of the car and locate Diagnostic test port (A) behind
the passenger side headlamp and closest to the fender (of the two
 diagnostic test ports).
 3. Remove the diagnostic port cover and pull the jumper wire out of
 it's holder in the cover.
 4. Insert the jumper into terminal #7, then press button (on the
diagnostic port) 4 times, wait approximately 5 seconds and the red lamp
(on the diagnostic port) should glow continuously. Your are now in the
 data reset mode.
 5. Press the button 1 time and wait approximately 5 seconds for the
lamp to glow again, then press the button 5 times. After about 5
seconds the lamp will illuminate again, press the button 1 time and you
will see the lamp flash repeatedly for a couple of seconds indicating
that the service lamp has been properly reset.
 6. If a mistake is made, simply switch the ignition off and back on to
KPII to reset and start over.

I have used the above process numerous times on a 1994 850 non-turbo.

Good luck, and remember the most important step is to conduct all the
preventative maintenance as described in the volvo service program
books volume 1 and 2 (Group 17), available from Volvo Literature for
 about $15.00 each.

The points made on the VDO versus a Yazaki Instrument Cluster is valid. The VDO uses the diagnostic unit under the hood to reset the service light. The
Yazaki is done through a hole to the left of center on the front of the Instrument Cluster. The easiest way of telling whether a instrument cluster is a VDO or
Yazaki is to look at the outside (while in the drivers seat). The Yazaki has 1) Distinctly seperated instrument modules (The entire face of the VDO looks like
one integeral unit). 2)The odometer and trip meter are located above and below the speedometer needle respectively (both are below on the VDO). 3)The
speedometer and tachometer scales are located outside the numbers (the numbers are outside the scale on the VDO). 4)The tachometer is marked in 8 X
1000 rpm (the VDO is marked in 7 X 1000 rpm).

 Hope this helps. Good luck.

That was too easy. I guess I'm one of the few with the reset button. Thanks for your help.
