Volve V70, 1996, 2.5 liter 20 Valve, non-turbo at 98k miles.

        I'm getting a light clunking from the front end of the car when I go over slightly bumpy ground.  I've
been all over the bottom end of the steering/suspension and found nothing loose. However on the top of the
two suspension towers (in the engine compartment) I can see a gap of about 3mm. in each of the
strut/suspension units, see photo.  When the car is jacked up, the gap goes to zero.  This would seem to be
the source of the sound.  Is this just an adjustment or are the springs on their way out?
