Baby Japanese Ranchus

In Japan, the best Ranchus are breed and kept by hobbyists of elite clubs. The clubs are very particular in maintaining the lineage and quality of their Ranchus and they do not produce as many hatchings as compared to big-scale commercial farms. Famous breeders like Kashino, Washizu, Ishikawa and Kawai breed their own line of Ranchus and frequently win top prizes in the club, district shows and the AJRS (All Japan Ranchu Show). Inevitably,  even baby Ranchus (2 inches) from these club breeders fetch a premium!

Jumbo Tosais
There are four seasons in Japan and the goldfish follows a very predictable reproductive cycle. They spawn in spring and hibernates in the winter. Large scale greenhouse facilities to keep goldfish will be expensive to maintain due to the high running cost of equipments like heaters. Spawning goldfish the whole year round is also infeasible due to the unavailability of live food for baby fish in the colder months. On the other hand, Thailand is the biggest player in top view Japanese ranchus. Thanks to the tropical climate, the Thai commercial farms is able to produce large quantities of baby ranchus the whole year round.
The seasonal spawning patterns of Ranchus in Japan has made it possible to classify competition Ranchus into 3 categories. Ranchus borned in the current year to 31st December of the same year is classified as Tosai (yearlings). On the first new year (1st January), the previous year Tosai is classified as the Nisai (2nd year fish) and on the subsequent new year, the Nisai would be classified as Oya (parent fish). If baby Ranchus are available the whole year round in Japan, a baby fish borned on the 31st of December would have become a Nisai immediately on the next day and the classification system would not make sense at all.
