EXTENDED COUNSELLING SUPPORT FOR ADULT CHILDREN OF
VIETNAM VETERANS

The Liberal-National Government will provide full counselling services for
older adult sons
and daughters of Vietnam veterans, in a move to further strengthen
assistance available to
the Vietnam veteran community, the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Bruce
Scott, announced
today.

Mr Scott said Vietnam veterans' children who were at or over the age of 36
would be
eligible for services provided by the Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service
for the next five
years from 1 July 2001. The Department of Veterans' Affairs would review
the need for
counselling of veterans' children over the age of 36 before the end of the
five-year
extension period.

"The findings of the 1999 Vietnam Veterans' Health Study highlighted the
pressures which
affect the children of Vietnam veterans, with an increased incidence of
suicide and
accidental death in this group," he said.

"The Government responded in the 2000-01 Budget with a series of
initiatives to
strengthen the mental health support available, including access to the VVCS for Vietnam
veterans' children up to their 36th birthday.

"After consulting further with the veteran community and particularly veteran parents, the
Government has recognised there are sons and daughters outside this age group who still
may be feeling the affects of family pressures in their childhood and adolescence.

"This five-year extension of access to the VVCS for older children will provide these people
with an opportunity to resolve those issues," the Minister said.

Mr Scott said that since the extension in December 2000 of VVCS services to include
veterans' children up to 35, there had been a 25 per cent increase in the number of sons
and daughters of Vietnam veterans seeking assistance from the counselling service.

"We expect the number of Vietnam veterans' adult children seeking assistance to continue
to increase," he said.

"As a result, the VVCS has begun appointing part-time specialist counsellors to support
this important group within the Vietnam veteran community.

Services available through the VVCS include psychiatric assessments, counselling and
educational and group therapy programs, as well as information sessions on health-related
topics such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

The VVCS can be contacted by calling 1800 019 332 in North Queensland, 1800 043 503 in New South Wales and 1800 011 046 in the ACT and the rest of the country.

The ADGie Gunner of the Future

Filling in the Pieces

The Last Few Days

The information you want is as follows:-
We were called Detachment S, Vietnam 1975, but was not awarded War Service or any recognition until 21 June 1997 - we were then awarded War Service. The names of all the A.D.G.'s who went into Vietnam were based at Saigon, flew from Tan Son Nhut Airport to all other outlying strips until those particular areas were overrun by N.V.A. or V.C. Our second task was to get the Ambassador and his Aides, his furniture and effects out of the country. This we did under extreme pressure and at times heavy fire.

The names of the A.D.G.'s are:-
Flt.Sgt. Tony NIBBS.
Sgt. John HANSEN.
Cpl. Viv RUSSELL.
Cpl. Ian DAINER.
LAC. Russ CARRIER.
LAC. Noel NEILSEN.
LAC. Trevor NYE.
LAC. Mike SHEEAN.
LAC. Trevor BYFIELD.

We were attached to I believe it was 36 Squadron Hercs. All aircraft used were Hercs except our flight from Butterworth to Saigon - she was the old Dak. Hope all this info helps you Bud because it's as best as I can remember.

The last four A.D.G.'s, which were the last Australian Servicemen to leave Vietnam, were Sgt. John HANSEN, Cpl. Ian DAINER, LAC Trevor NYE and LAC Mike SHEEAN, after being left behind and forgotten about for a period we believe the media stated - 6 hours.
