G'day fellas!
Sorry to hear you have been sick Mick. Hope all is ok, and that you are on the road to recovery.
I just decided to have a quick look through the ADGs website again and am very pleased to see your note.
I won't go into too much now, but it looks as though things are starting to move with my push to convince DVA that the Vietnam War actually continued until the final surrender of the South Vietnamese Government, i.e. 30 April 1975.
My 3 page Submission has been accepted by the Veterans' Review Committee. National VVAA have added support in their submission, and Lyall Klaffer has sent a letter to the Committee confirming his support.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed, so won't bother you with too much now. You take care, and look after yourself.
Look forward to hearing from you when you get home.
Cheers! Geoff

Subject: A Troop, 7/17th Cav
Hello Bob,
Saw your note on A troop guest book. While I certainly won't recall names and faces I will never forget our Aussie friends at Phan Rang. I was there 71-72 and flew Cobra gunships and OH-6A scouts. I do recall several friendly brawls at Officers club at top of hill....occasionally involving enlisted soldiers too!
Hope all is well.
Jeff

Gday Jeff,
Thanks for the email yes your just like me, after thirty odd years its impossible to recall the names but I'm sure that the good times won't be forgotten. I travelled first class in your Iroquois to many places on my days off enjoying the American friendship and hospitality, got to meet quite a few of the enlisted men of the 7/17th at Phan-Rang, i recall the odd hangover or two.
No doubt you have been to our web site if not then heres the url http://au.oocities.com/ozflea20/adg1.html mind you we all still look as if nothing has changed (Bullshit havn't we).

PARADE TO HONOUR RESERVE SERVICE
The Australian Defence Force will commemorate and celebrate the service of
Australia's Reserves to the nation with the 2002 Reserve Forces Day march
through the streets of Sydney, the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and
Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, Danna Vale, announced today.
Minister Vale said the Federal Government had provided a $7500
commemorations grant to assist with the costs of the march, including the
publication of a commemorative program.
The Federal Government also has committed more than $1.4 million in Defence
support and resources to Defence Reserves 2002, a series of events being
held throughout Australia to demonstrate the value of our Reserve Forces to
the community.
Minister Vale said Reserve Forces Day was inaugurated to celebrate and
commemorate the service and achievements of the Reserve Forces of the
Australian Defence Force, both past and present, and to thank employers and
families for their support of Reserve personnel.
The Sydney parade, organised and conducted by the Reserve Forces Day Council
Inc, will begin at 11am on 7 July, with current and former members from the
Navy, Army and Air Force Reserves and Reserve Associations marching north
down Macquarie Street to the Botanical Gardens.
"Reservists make a vital contribution to our Australian Defence Force and
provide much- needed skills and expertise in times of need," she said
"They are the backbone of our armed forces and have served their country in
theatres of war from World War II to Korea, Vietnam and the current
peacekeeping operations in East Timor and Bougainville.
"In the past two years, the ADF has deployed more Reservists on full-time
service than at any time since the end of WWII. The first Reserve combat
arms unit to deploy on operations since that conflict will serve in East
Timor later this year."
Minister Vale said that as well as honouring the dedication and service of
former and current service members of the Australian Reserve Forces,
re-enactment groups including representations of the first English forces
deployed in the colony of New South Wales, the Light Horse, the 18th
Battalion AIF and the Nursing Corps would accompany the Reservists.
"Reserve Forces Day and Defence Reserves 2002 events are being held
throughout Australia between June and September.
"I encourage all Australians to attend these events and take the time to say
'Thank You' to our Reservists for their service and sacrifice in the defence
of our nation," Minister Vale said.

REPATRIATION COMMISSIONER REAPPOINTED
The veteran community's representative on the Repatriation Commission, Major
General Paul Stevens AO has been reappointed for a further 12 months from
25 August, the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Danna Vale, announced today.
Minister Vale said the Governor-General had approved the reappointment of
Major General Stevens, who has been Repatriation Commissioner since August
1997.
"Major General Stevens has provided outstanding leadership during his terms
and I am delighted to ask him to carry on his work.
"He has excellent rapport with members of the ex-service community which
strongly supports his continuing in this role.
"His reappointment will ensure the Repatriation Commission continues its
tradition of treating the veteran and defence force community with courtesy,
respect and sensitivity," Minister Vale said.
The Repatriation Commission is responsible for granting pensions, allowances
and other benefits to veterans, their dependants and other eligible persons,
providing treatment and other services, and generally administering the
Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986, including providing advice to the Minister
on matters relating to the Act.
"Major General Stevens' experience in Australian Defence Force personnel
issues had been invaluable in progressing the Links project between the
Department of Veterans' Affairs, which supports the work of the Repatriation
Commission, and the Department of Defence.
"He is also involved in the development of the new Military, Safety,
Rehabilitation and Compensation Scheme and is a part of the team preparing
for the tabling of this legislation, " Minister Vale said
Major General Stevens was born in Melbourne and graduated from the Royal
Military College Duntroon in 1967. He also has a Bachelor of Arts degree
from the University of Queensland and completed the Company Director's
Course run by the Australian Institute of Company Directors in association
with the University of New England.
During the Vietnam War, he served as an artillery battery officer, a forward
observer and with regimental intelligence.
He was the Australian Army's Chief of Personnel from 1993 until his
retirement in 1997.
