VETERANS' AFFAIRS OFFICE OPENED IN TWEED HEADS

Veterans and war widows living in the Tweed region now have local access to
services from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, following the official
opening of the new Veterans' Affairs Network (VAN) office in Tweed Heads.

The VAN office, which is centrally located at Tweed Shopping Mall, was
opened today by the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Danna Vale, and the
Minister for Children and Youth Affairs and Federal Member for Richmond,
Larry Anthony.

Minister Vale said the VAN office provided a one-stop location for DVA
services, where veterans and war widows could meet with advisers to discuss
their needs.

"As the veteran population ages, the Federal Government is committed to
providing services to veterans and war widows where they are most needed,"
Minister Vale said.

"The Tweed Heads VAN is a place where veterans and war widows can lodge
claims for entitlements as well as find out more about other Federal
Government benefits and services.

Mr Anthony said he was pleased to honour his 2001 election commitment on
behalf of the Coalition Government to establish the Veterans' office in
Tweed Heads.

"More than 6,400 veterans and dependants live in the Tweed region, making
this the second largest veteran community in the country," Mr Anthony said.

"The Federal Government is committed to ensuring regional and rural veterans
are able to access services available to their city counterparts.

"Before this office was established, veterans from the Tweed region had to
travel to Lismore or Southport to access VAN services. Local veterans now
have access to this type of facility within our own community.

"This is just another example of how the Federal Government is continuing to
provide services to regional and rural Australia," Mr Anthony said.

BARDIA DAY SERVICE HONOURS NATIONAL SERVICEMEN

The annual Bardia Day memorial service was held today at the Ingleburn
Military History Precinct, marking the anniversary of the first intake of
National Servicemen in 1951.

The Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister Assisting the Minister for
Defence, Danna Vale, said Bardia Day commemorated the service and
achievements of the National Servicemen who passed through Bardia Barracks
at Ingleburn.

"Bardia Day remembers the 16th Brigade troops who trained at the barracks
and achieved a magnificent victory at Bardia in North Africa in 1941, as
well as the anniversary of the first intake of National Servicemen into what
was to become Bardia Barracks, on 6 August 1951," the Minister said.

More than 300 former National Servicemen took part in the Bardia Day march
on Mont St Quentin Oval and a memorial service and wreath laying at the
National Servicemen's Memorial.

"More than 300 000 Australians were conscripted from all walks of life into
military service during the 50s, 60s and 70s," Minister Vale said.

"National Servicemen, or 'nashos' as they were affectionately known, made a
vital contribution to our Defence Force in a time of need."

The Minister said that National Servicemen went on to serve with the regular
forces in the Korean War, Malayan Emergency and Borneo during the Indonesian
Confrontation. More than 17 000 National Servicemen served with distinction
in South Vietnam.

"They stepped forward with pride and commitment to fulfil a duty and their
contribution to our nation should be celebrated."

"Days like Bardia Day and National Servicemen's Day as well as the
Anniversary of National Service 1951-1972 Medal show the nation's gratitude
and ensure that current and future generations of Australians never forget
the sacrifices made by our National Servicemen," the Minister said.
