Uncle Vic is off again.

Jeff, POM and Ian
It's Sunday 17 November as I write this. I was asked on Wednesday if I would consider going to Bougainville with the Peace Monitoring Group for 4 months. Talked it over with Joyce and said yes on Thursday. It's a short notice thing as some one else had to drop out. In fact, we only received confirmation on Friday. So I've just spent a couple of hectic days trying to organise everything. Tomorrow (Monday 18 Nov 02) I'm off to Randwick Barracks in Stdney for some predeployment training. Hopefully I will get back home next Friday as we had a couple of different functions lined up. We were going to a mixed Dining In night at Amberley SGTs Mess on Friday night (22 Nov 02) then the Air Movements XMAS do at Alexandra Headlands on Saturday and Sunday. As for Bougainville, I deploy there on Wednesday week (27 Nov 02) and will be there through to the end of March 2003.

Vic Smith

ps Vic send some happy snaps of beautiful downtown Bougainville when you get time.

The Pom.

LAC Matthew Martin

Personnel of No 2 Airfield Defence Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley were devastated to hear the news that fun loving Leading Aircraftman Matthew Martin, the man with an "infectious spirit", had died in a road accident on November 1.

LAC Martin from the Amberley Squadron and Corporal Douglas Frederiksen of 386 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron in Sydney were tragically killed in a single military vehicle accident near Cooroy.

The pair were part of a convoy on their way to the Sniper Basic Course being conducted at the Wide Bay Training Area. LAC Martin was providing communication support and CPL Frederiksen was one of two personnel attached to the course for catering support.

Though details of precisely how the accident occurred have not yet been established, it was understood the pair were in the last Fitted For Radio (FFR) vehicle in a convoy of military vehicles on their way to the course when the accident happened.

21C Signals Section and friend, LAC Steven Meyer, said LAC Martin had a happy, cheeky personality, was easy to get along with, worked hard at his job and was always caring of others. He said the Squadron was still in shock about the news of the man who was as "keen as mustard" and loved to learn, and said the Squadron had not been as shaken by a death of this nature since the war.

LAC Martin joined the RAAF in 1999 before being posted to 1 Rifle Flight, 2AFDS at Amberley in August 2000. Since then he has worked hard in the Signals section for the last four months, and his last exercise involvement was during SWIFT EAGLE running communications and safety nets.

In his spare time he loved to play weekend touch. He also had played gridiron and enjoyed playing tactical computer games.

In his old office area now sits a flower arrangement of dried native maroon and yellow flowers signify the colours of the rugby league team he followed, the Brisbane Broncos.

2AFDS have also honoured the LAC by putting his name on the Squadron's bar, now titled the Matthew Martin Bar, for all personnel to remember him by when having a laugh and drink with mates. LAC Meyer said he thought Matthew would have a laugh at having the bar named after him.

LAC Martin was farewelled by his wife and family at Centenary Memorial Gardens in a full military funeral on 7th November and a further memorial service was held at the Memorial Wall at the main entrance to RAAF Amberley the following day.
