Lieutenant Verakov’s team included several trained chefs, a few experienced former kitchen hands and several keen amateur cooks, though the majority of helpers were volunteer men and women who were no more than proficient at providing meals from a recipe file for their partners and forebears. The Russian had led her team with a well practiced hand from the outset, gaining their wholehearted and enthusiastic support, and soon she had them following recipe matrices to her precise specifications; though the preparation of all the real foodstuffs was left to the more experienced and trained staff.
