TESTIMONIAL'S

James Alston & Sons   Catalogue

(circa 1935)

'Redbank', Scone, NSW.

You may be interested to know that the 12ft. Alston Mill I got from you 2 years ago
has done splendid work and never given a minute's trouble.
It pumps water 800 yards from Dartbrook to a 5,000 gallon yank at my house, which is 60ft. above the creek.
The water is used on a large garden freely, and the tank is never dry.
Even with this load the Mill works freely in a very light breeze.
I have, as you know, a 10ft. and an 8ft. Alston in addition,
and these 2 have been in use for 9 years & 11 years respectively, with the same satisfactory results.

(Sgd) W. T. Badgery.

'Creey House', Longford, TAS.

The plant was installed about 15 years ago by A. G. Webster & Sons under the supervision of Henry Mohr,
who planned the service.
The Alston Mill is just short of a mile from the river to the tanks, with about a 90ft. rise; a 2 inch main is used.
Mr Mohr was most particular and thorough in his work, and his laying out of the service, most satisfactory.
This entailed considerable detail as the water is laid on to the house, 2 cottages, gardens, dip, and a number of paddocks.
The whole service has been most satisfactory, exceeding expectations as to the supply of water obtained.
There has been no trouble or expense incurred since the installation.
The plant to-day is as efficient as when first installed.

'Coggan', Wollar, NSW.

I thank you for your prompt reply to my windmill enquiry, and herewith enclose cheque,
in return I would be thankful if you would send
to Mudgee R.S. for me one of your 8ft. Double Geared Windmills with attachments to connect to tower,
the measurements of which are given on accompanying plan. I have, since 1926, one of your E.D.G. Mills working,
which has given every satisfaction.

(Sgd) William Mead.

Latrobe, TAS.

I am pleased to be able to inform you that the Alston Mill supplied 2 years ago is doing excellent work,
and I am very pleased with it. As you are aware, this Mill was installed taking place of the Alston Mill sold
to my father 27 years ago, which gave excellent service.

(Sgd) W. C. Campbell.

Montagu, NW Coast, TAS.

I have 2 Alston Mills on my farms, which are giving excellent service,
and I have not had one minute's trouble since installation.

(Sgd) J. Gourlay.

'Ballandry', Yenda, NSW.

Enclosed herewith, I beg to hand you my cheque for the 2nd 14ft. Enclosed Double Geared Mill purchased from you
I have had a lot of delay with this bore, owing to stone, and as a result have not sufficient water yet.
I am not sure when the 3rd Mill will be required. The one already working is very satisfactory;
at last test it was lifting 240 gallons per hour.
and as it only takes a very light wind to drive it, it is nearly always working.
I am pumping into a 500-yard tank and watering 2,000 ewes and their lambs there. The tank is now nearly full,
although the sheep were put there when there was less that 6 inches of water in the tank,
and there has not been one drop of rain for the tank in all this time.

(Sgd) H. Aston.

Fairley, VIC.

I am enclosing a photograph of one of your 8ft. Enclosed Double Geared Mills.

It has never given a hint of trouble all these years, beyond filling with oil about every 9 months,

and has weathered some rough storms, which blew down the trees around it.

(Sgd) David Moore.

Wagga wagga, NSW.

As I now have 2 Alston 10ft. Enclosed Double geared Mills working on my property at Wagga Wagga,
I wish to purchase a 3rd Mill.

(Sgd) Thos. Dodwell.

Greenhills. TAS.

It gives me pleasure to write to you on the splendid performance or the 2 Alston Mills I have on my property,
one of which has been in use for the past 17 years, doing excellent work,
and I have no hesitation in recommending 'Alston' to the man on the land.

(Sgd) F. G. C. Smith.

Swan Hill, VIC.

Enclosed please find order and cheque. The 8ft. Enclosed Double Geared Mill is giving complete satisfaction.
The oil system is splendid.

(Sgd) H. C. Brawn.

'Pine hill', Jerilderie, NSW.

I received the oil, etc. safely. I am well satisfied with the way the Alston E.D.G. Windmills have done their work for me.

I have 4 of them. Wishing you the compliments of the season.

(Sgd) Alex Ryan.

'Dalree', Jerilderie, NSW.

I must thank you very much for the two 12ft. Alston E.D.G. Mills; they are giving great satisfaction; they work so smoothly.
They are a great combination, the 12ft. wheel and 30ft. tower; these towers are a long way ahead of the shorter towers
and are handy for drawing pipes. Your latest Mills, like the 2 I have, are a great invention; they will go for 6 months
without doing anything to them. There is not a motor car on the market that will go for long before you have to attend
to it some way to keep it going. I have just completed a 500 - yard yank for each of the above Mills to pump into,
and I have turned the Mills on and they are now pumping into these tanks from 2 bores in which we get fresh water
at 121ft. and 134ft. It is a great benefit getting fresh water.
I have 7 Alston Mills on my property now, so that speaks well for your firm.

(Sgd) Gordon Liddle.

Aberdeen, NSW.

The 14ft. E.D.G. Mill is doing good work, runs in a light wind, works very smoothly,
and does not race or cut out too easily in heavy winds

(Sgd) J. Park Fleming.

'Warrook' Monomeith. Vic.

The 6ft. Alston Enclosed Self-Oiling Planetary Geared Mill, Model 33, supplied to us in January last;
It has given great satisfaction, it is a silent, efficient and free worker, and has done very well
during the past dry and calm autumn.

(Sgd) W. C. Greaves & Son.

'Summerville', Brighton Junction, TAS.

I have pleasure in informing you that the 2 Alston Enclosed Self-Oiling Planetary Geared Mills installed on my
properties have given me the best of service and are in every way an entirely satisfactory job.

(Sgd) R. C. Thompson.

Colbinabbin, Vic.

The Alston Planetary Geared Mill I purchased is working splendidly. It's 2½ pump has a lift of 80ft. to the surface
and has to pump a quarter of a mile through a 1¼inch pipe to a height a 40ft. Well, I think it is far superior
to the old one and I am more that highly satisfied with it, and it is an easy mill to work with.

(Sgd) W. W. Weeks.

Rupanyup, Vic.

Last December I purchased a 7ft. Alston Planetary Geared Mill, Model 33. Compared with the old 8ft. wheel that I had,
it seems to me to be more efficient and powerful, takes less wind to drive it, and needs less attention,
on account of the gearing being worked in oil. I am more than satisfied with the new mill.

(Sgd) Geo. L. Cromie.

Lismore, Vic.

I wish to state that I am pleased with the 8ft. Alston Planetary Geared Mill. I have not been out of water
during the 3 months I have been depending on it, and as the wind has been unusually light during this time.
I have a very high opinion of its light running qualities. It has supplied 12 draught horses and 15 cows
with water during this period and has forced the water a distance of 10 chains to an elavation of 40ft.

(Sgd) M. Hickey

Holbrook, NSW.

I have much pleasure in writing to you on behalf of Mrs. Randal, to state that the Alston Planetary Geared Mill
supplied by you has always, and is still, giving entire satisfaction. When this Mill was erected by me,
I gave Mrs. Randal 3 years guarantee to keep same in repair free of cost to her.
Now the 3 years have expired, and I am pleased to state
that it has never given me occasion to repair or replace any part of the Mill,
and I may state that it is performing its function to-day as it did when first erected,
and during the dry spell here Mrs. Randal was enable to grow such vegetables that her garden
was the envy of everyone who had pleasure of viewing it

(Sgd) George Shirley.

Streatham, Vic.

The 6ft. Alston Mill supplied to me in Nov 1934 was erected on a 50ft. bore to fill a 2,000 gallon tank.
I had no trouble with it through the summer and was never short of water, and it worked very smoothly.
The 8ft. mill and tower I put on the dam to pump and force water about 15 chains to a tank at the house.
Has also worked splendidly and was no trouble.

(Sgd) T. W. Wills

'Wooloomanata', Lara, Vic.
I have pleasure supplying particulars about the 20ft Alston Gearless Mill I have.
The Mill pumps from a dam up to storage tanks about half a mile away. The tanks then supply
a 4 acre garden, consisting of lawn, fruit orchard, vegetables and flowers, and also water for
500 sheep, cows and horses. The Mill is running continuously for about 8 months of the year,
balance as required. Attention required to the mill is about 2 hours per year.
This is a splendid MIll and has exceeded expectations, requires very little attention,
is easy to oil, and even in a light breeze, it pumps a good stream of water.
Apart from oil, the only expense during the 5 years it has been running,
has been 2/- for a Retention Valve Leather and Packing.

(Sgd) S. Cadwell, Manager.

'Thylungra' Station, Adavale, QLD.

I have several 20ft. Alston Gearless Mills on our property, one is lifting water 350ft.
working a 3½inch pump and watering up to 800 cattle. Sufficient testimonial is the fact
that we have about 30 Alston Mills erected and all doing splendid work.
During the past 13 years we not spent £10 in duplicates, this alone proves
the Mills are suitable for the country in which they are erected.
Further more I would like to order 4 more 20ft. Alston Gearless Mills
for 'Comongin' Station in Quilpie.

(Sgd) E. S. Pegler

'Ghoolendaadi', Boggabri, NSW.

There are 5 Alston Direct Acting Mills on our property, which I consider a cut above any other mill.
They work with very little wind and pump more water than any mill here, and there are several
different makes of mills here besides the Alston. It would be difficult to improve in this mill,
and when more are required I will send you an order.

(Sgd) G. H. Brown, Manager.

'Yeringberg', Victoria.
The 20ft. Alston Gearless Mill on a 40ft. Tower you supplied in December 1925 is still working perfectly.
It is delivering the water into a tank a mile and a half distant, and the lift is about 300ft.
The Mill is giving me entire satisfaction. I had a steam pump doing this work for many years,
but it entailed a lot of labour and time, now the water is coming up without expense,
and it is very rare that there is not enough wind to keep me sufficiently supplied,
as it requires only a slight breeze to turn the Mill.
I only wish that I had put the Mill up many years ago.

(Sgd) George De Pury.
