Here are photographs of some of the remaining parts of the station that are still in use in 1999. (the photographs on this page were taken Sep-Nov 1999)
Here is Hamworthy station seen from the west end of the up platform, The canopy over the up platform is a survivor of change, There used to be a canopy over the down platform protecting a series of store rooms, waiting room, etc. The down platform buildings and canopy were removed during modifications made to the station in 1972, and replaced by a metal `bus shelter' type design, which offers passengers little in the way of protection from the weather.
The foot crossing at the east end of the station was closed to passenger use in the 1970's. The railings around the tops of the underpass steps have survived for many years, with a few more coats of paint they should do their job well into the new Millenium. The top step of the underpass stairs on both platforms is at the original platform level, there is a distinct `slope' in the tarmac on the current platform around the top of the stairs bringing the platform level up to meet `new regulations'. I think this occured in the 1972 rebuild but due to conflicting information It may have been done in the mid 80's when some work was done on the platforms. (If anyone can clarify this matter I would be most interested to hear from you!.
The underpass at Hamworthy allows pedestrians & cyclists to pass beneath the railway between Junction Road on the Up side and Galloway Road on the down side, access to both platforms from the underpass is up stairs, Only the up line has platform level access from Junction Road. The underpass is marked as Bridge 82a, The bridge plate can be seen on the face of the up platform, there are wooden sleepers over this bridge on the up line only which makes a difference in the noise levels between up & down trains, the up line being the quieter, the down line has concrete sleepers and is noticeably louder, especially at night.
