Pinewood Derby

March 2002

Cub Scouts Pack 877

The Pinewood Derby is a yearly event in which Scouts build a racing car from a block of pine wood (a kit actually).  The cars then race against each other (by Den) and the winners are eligible to compete in the District's Derby.  Images of this year's event are given below...

This car was built by a sibling of a Wolf Scout. A Star Wars Battle Droid pilots the craft, complete with safety bars and a custom-designed, adjustable weighting mechanism on the back.

Here we have a beautifully-decorated vehicle that emphasized the use of decals.  Number 7 is a nice-looking vehicle, created by one of our Wolf Scouts.

This car was the Wolf Den Leader's design and was used as the example in the "How to Build a Derby Car...Just the Basics" class/presentation.  It used steel rods as weight inserted through the middle of car body.  This car (for some unknown reason) was by far the slowest vehicle in the open class...it didn't win a race all day.

This derby car, painted in Cub Scout colors, was named the "Maximum" by its Wolf Scout creator (note the large "M" on the hood).  It sported muffler-type weights along with adjustable washer-type weights on the rear (simulated spare tire).
