Wolves Den Meeting,

Cub Scouts Pack 877

Getting Started & Learning About Our U.S. Flag

We held our opening flag ceremony led by the Denner (Scott) and Assistant Denner (William).  Afterward, we reviewed the Cub Scout salute, as well as the meaning of the Wolf Ears sign (means I'm ready to listen to Akela - the leader).   Additionally, we discussed the U.S. Flag and how to care for it.  In pairs, we illustrated and practiced the proper technique for folding the flag (not shown).

Project:  Paper Sack Kite (Arrow Trail Activity)

This week's project was to construct a kite with only a paper sack, tape, and felt marker.  This activity is actually activity 5B on the Arrow Trail in the Wolf Book.  In hindsight, it was a little too much for such a short time and we didn't fully finish.  But it should serve as good understanding and practice if they decide to complete the activity and get credit/sign-off as part of the arrow trail.

Game:  Beans & Chopsticks

Our game this week had two parts.  Each scout was given a paper plate, cup, set of chopsticks, and 20 beans.  Upon the word "go", they were to use the chopsticks to pick up beans off their plate and drop them into the cup.  After a certain time period, we counted up to see how much success they had.  With just the plain wooden chopsticks, it was pretty hard (as anticipated).  In the next phase of the game, the Scouts were shown how to use a rubber band to secure one end of the chopsticks.  A rolled-up piece of paper was inserted between the chopsticks near the rubber band.  This created a kind of tweezers....making the job of picking up and holding the beans much easier.  After the game, they were told how the improvised tweezers could be made and used anytime they went out for oriental food.

Putting Dads to Work

With all the adult talent at the meeting, we just couldn't let it go to waste.  So, we started obtaining "volunteers" for a variety of jobs/tasks to help the Den.  These included:

Assistant Den Leader for the Evening (adult host of the meeting)

Secretary of Trail Progress (records completed tracks from the Wolf Books)

Next Meeting Planner (host for next meeting identifies specific games/projects).

Sign-Up Coordinator (Identified people to bring materials for upcoming Pack Party)

Here you can see some of the Dads hard at work.

Trail Progress

Once again 'round the pretend campfire, we reviewed the Trail Progress chart and its meaning.  The awards ceremony at the upcoming Pack meeting was discussed (many are due for their Bobcat badges at that time).  Additionally, the Scouts were introduced to the "bead" system to measure/display progress on the Wolf trail.
