Open Mouth, Insert Foot
from the Days of Our
Lives Discussion Group
Days of Our Lives is a very long-running soap opera with a rich
history and an extremely loyal fan base. In fact, these fans are so
loyal they stick with the show even when they know they're being used
and abused. The extent of which the powers behind Days have taken the
foundation the show is based upon and pulled it completely from the
ground is not only unbelievably self-defeating on their part, but
downright insulting as far as the LEGITIMATE fans are concerned. How
new viewers find exhilliration in a show that has no problems with
disregarding/rewriting everything they show and take pride in talking
down to them is beyond me. Ken Corday, Tom Langan, and company must
feel really secure in knowing that the world's population of stupid
people keeps growing each day, since that means more Days viewers who
won't as much as flinch as the show's garbage keeps piling up. In
fact, here's two of them right now.
Topic: If you are against Carrie and Mike
getting together then...

Additional Comments: you have an IQ less than Austin Reed.
Carrie and Mike are sweet, lively, romantic, and most importantly
intelligent. How can you not want them together? Let's ponder
Carrie's options for a second with open minds. Austin when he's not
in the ring losing brain cells that he cannot afford to lose, is
working for his mother at a company he has not set foot in since
Carrie quit her job. Proving his naitivity, Austin forgave Sami who
supposedly ruined his love life with Carrie for years and is
currently spending all his time with the conniving wench instead of
with his loveable wife. On the other hand, Mike is an intelligent
doctor who just got promoted to COS. He can hold a conversation with
Carrie without stammering and he expects more from her than sex and
children. Carrie needs to get a quicky divorce and a have a big white
wedding or a long engagement.
"How are people supposed to be open minded if they MUST agree
with you 100% about this? Your clamoring for open mindedness is like
Hitler supporting the NAACP. Were you even thinking about what you
were writing or is Ken Corday once again doing all the thinking for
you? Take a look at your so-called defense in support of a
Mike/Carrie liaison. Yes, what Austin is doing is cause for more than
a slight strain between his marriage to Carrie, but HOW this
dissonance came about is a different issue all together. His actions
weren't DEVELOPED into his character; they just appeared out of the
blue one day to appease the very likes of you who don't care about
anything that doesn't fit into your tunnel vision.
"I'm dumbfounded at how many times I have to repeat myself, but
considering how much Days repeats EVERYTHING on a single day's
episode and the number of viewers who COMPLETELY FAIL to notice the
obvious, it should come as no surprise that you just DON'T GET IT and
never will. This ENTIRE Austin/Carrie/Mike story is based on plot
contrivances. Nothing led up to any of this to be the way it is, it
just happened one day, like Lexie forgiving Stefano of all his crimes
simply because he saved Roman's life despite clear ulterior motives,
or Penelope forgiving Edmund for killing cousing Penelope because she
was dying anyway. After all, a relative dying is no big deal, right?
Especially if your lover is the killer. How about you ponder the
concept of character development and get back to me when you figure
it out (meaning I will NEVER hear from you again)?
"First we're presented with a convenient childhood history
between Mike and Carrie that literally came out of thin air and which
conflicts with everything that ever happened to build up the
character of Dr. Michael Horton. Then we have another of Sami's
schemes to break Austin and Carrie apart by somehow making her spend
more time with Mike. (Ever notice that ALL schemes on Days involve
characters who are magically able to make other characters do their
bidding, with EVERYTHING miraculously able to fall into place
regarding the impossible plan?) Then Sami is able to get Austin to
start boxing again just like that. Austin, in turn, conveniently
forgets that he never liked to box and the reasons why he had to box
in the first place. All the while self-confident Mike turns into
spineless Mike, and constantly stares at Carrie from afar with puppy
dog eyes. But not to be outdone, Austin now forgives Sami for
everything evil she's ever done to him and acts like they never even
happened. Why? Not because of any character development within Austin
about finding peace or the willingness to forgive but not forget, but
rather because Carrie needs a reason to be drawn closer to
Mike.
"Yes, Mike is an intelligent doctor -- the ONE TRAIT that has
more or less remained with this character over the years and through
this horrible rewrite -- but think about how PATHETIC the whole Chief
of Staff process was: the whole stupid sex scandal (one of many
prolonging contrivances), the incident with Craig and the unnecessary
operation, Nancy just standing around eavesdropping on everyone
without anyone ever noticing that's she's spending all her time
snooping and not working, the way Ali got involved in the plot, the
way the committee that selected the COS were written/portrayed--the
list is more numerous than the amount of bad dialogue in a Pauly
Shore movie, which isn't nearly as much as the amount of bad dialogue
in a single Days's flashback. This whole Craig vs. Mike scenario was
as bad a piece of writing as it gets. Now you may be watching the
show, but you certainly aren't seeing it.
"It's the writers and their bosses who are stupid--who in turn
make the show stupid--and viewers like you who think this entire mess
is what you SHOULD expect from ALL soaps are the ones who are truly
naive."

Message:
History! This is coming from people who are supposed to be 'mature
audiences'. If you are mature, then you will realise that this is
soap opera, no matter how you demand it, it would never be real and
in fact that's why most of you are watching it because they are so
different from your boring life. Face it, history does not matter in
Soap Opera and the sooner you get the fact, the more you'll realise
that you are actually are not so mature after all. I mean all you
guys have done are whinging like a little 5 year old that their
favourite couple on telly have been ripped apart. Well too bad! life
is hard and this is just telly, get used to it! Carrie and Austin is
the past and boy, was it a boring past! I still can't understand why
Carrie would go for a guy who trust her sister more than herself.
Austin was a loser right from the start (yes, even during Patrick
Muldoon days). So it's your call, if you don't want to watch Days
because now Carrie looks excellent with Mike then, don't watch! Stop
whining and watch something else. And oh, for your info, I am not a
teenager but I am sure you're going to argue that I sound like one
just because I like Mike and Carrie. How intelligent of you!
"This is one of many comments that I've come across over the
years that need not be remarked about, because it already sets itself
up for failure with its blatant inability to support its own
argument. For example, the 'life is hard and this is just telly'
comment stands out like a Chastity Bono speech about the sins of
homosexuality at the Republican National Convention. Which one is it,
Last Action Hero? Real life or fictitious television? Your competency
not only has gone the direction of Andrew Dice Clay's career, but
it's been cremated and left outside to be blown around aimlessly by
Hurricane Idiocy.
"Again, I must repeat myself for yet another brain-dead Days
watcher who wouldn't notice something if it glued itself to his/her
face with a chewed piece of bubble gum and did the Irish jig while
singing 'Achey Breaky Heart' in Scandinavian. Your entire argument in
favor of a Mike/Carrie pairing is that Roark Critchlow and Christie
Clark look 'excellent' together. Boy, if Roark had been cast as Eric
-- Carrie's HALF BROTHER -- I would hate to see how much of this
show's history you would be willing to ignore in order to see the two
get together, seeing as how you're against history, character
development, and everything that lends itself to quality writing.
What is the point of YOU even watching the show if what you see one
episode can and will be completely ignored and/or contradicted the
next? Isn't history the POINT of continuing to watch a soap, to watch
the characters you love or love to hate continuing on with their
lives, growing and encountering new things? Those who complain want
the show to be good -- to be like the way it actually was once upon a
time -- and those who don't complain also think that Steven Seagal is
in the same class of actors as Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, and Denzel
Washington.
"You're the reason this show had to be dumbed down to the
comprehension level of a six month old fetus. And by the way, I don't
think you're a teenager-like airhead because you like Mike and
Carrie, but because your entire argument lacks reason and
definition."
