Ombudsman Update for W/E 05/07/04

Welcome to the weekly PACAREA TACLET Ombudsman update for the week ending 05/07/04!

TRICARE NEWS:

FROM THE TRICARE FACT BOOK: TRICARE Prime

Is TRICARE PRIME the Right Plan for You? It depends. TRICARE Prime may be the least costly of the three TRICARE options for you.  You'll be able to predict your health care costs more exactly.  As noted earlier, there's no enrollment fee for active duty members and their families, and no co-payments when you get health care within the TRICARE Prime network of civilian providers.  For retirees and other TRICARE Prime-eligible beneficiaries, there is a small enrollment fee and minimal co-payments when getting health care through the TRICARE Prime network.

ON THIS MOTHER'S DAY:

Mothers were first officially honored on 9 May 1914, with the first National Mother's Day Proclamation, signed by President Woodrow Wilson. It designated the second Sunday in May as a "public _expression of...love and reverence for the mothers of our country." This was due to the life-long efforts of Anna Jarvis, the daughter of a Methodist minister in West Virginia. She organized Mothers' Day Work Clubs to care for wounded Civil War soldiers, both Union and Confederate, raised money for medicine, inspected bottled milk, improved sanitation, and hired women to care for families where mothers suffered from tuberculosis. In his Mother's Day Proclamation, 1986, President Ronald Reagan said: "A Jewish saying sums it up: 'God could not be everywhere -- so He created mothers.' "

OMBUDSMAN SEARCH:

As you may know, Senior Chief Kramer and I are reporting to a new duty station (Group North Bend, OR) sometime in June. CDR DeQuattro is still seeking applicants for the ombudsman position. Any spouse can be an ombudsman - contrary to popular belief, you do NOT have to be the spouse of an officer or a Chief. All that's required is general familiarity with Coast Guard missions, organizations and traditions.  Some duties include but are not limited to: the ability to provide unit and Coast Guard specific information to family members, make referrals to appropriate resources and effectively communicate family member concerns to the Command.  All Basic Training will be provided.  You will not need to know all the answers - there will always be someone to call who can help you with any situation.

In my eighteen months as PACTACLET's ombudsman, I have enjoyed an incredible level of support from the Command staff. It has truly been an honor to serve the Command in this capacity, making our time at PACTACLET one of the best in our entire Coast Guard career. Before I get all misty, I'd like to urge any of you with a little extra time and a desire to make a difference to contact either me, CDR DeQuattro <pdequattro @d11.uscg.mil>, or LT Rojas <rrojas@ d11.uscg.mil> if you'd like to be considered for the ombudsman position. I haven't regretted it for a moment, and I know you won't, either.

--------------------------------

That's it for this week! Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Semper Paratus,

Nancy Kramer
PACTACLET Ombudsman
619-244-1407 (cell)
619-659-8910 (until June 1)
