Ombudsman Update for W/E 05/21/04
Welcome to the weekly PACAREA TACLET Ombudsman update for the week ending 05/21/04! School's almost out - so the focus seems to be on kids in this issue. But hopefully, there's something for everybody this week. Enjoy!MILITARY STUDENTS:
The Department of Defense hosts an excellent website for schools, military leaders, and transitioning students in military families and their parents or caregivers. Military Student.org offers online information plus a monthly newsletter with lots of fantastic advice on a wide range of topics, including timing the college application process, scholarships for military kids, and articles on schools that have done something special to recognize the unique needs of the military student. There's even a section of the site called Teen Central, a safe, anonymous place for teens to tell their story, get (or give) advice, and find tools to work through things that are going on in their life. Visit them today: http://www.militarystudent.org/CONTEST FOR MILITARY KIDS:

IT'S THIS WEEKEND:
It's finally here - the 18th Original Bay Bridge Run/Walk 2004! This Sunday, run or walk across the majestic Coronado Bay Bridge to raise funds to support Navy Quality of Life Programs. Coasties and their families are eligible to use lots of Navy services and programs - so this is a very worthy cause. Bring your camera - how many times do you get the chance to stop in the middle of the Coronado Bridge and take a picture like that? This 4-mile event starts at Harbor and 5th at 8 AM, and entrants can register on Sunday morning from 6:30 - 7:25 AM. Strollers are permitted! Registration includes a very cool T-shirt and a ticket to the May 31 Padres game at PETCO Park. At the finish line in Tidelands Park, there will be refreshments, sponsor booths, prize drawings, childrens' activities, and live music by the Navy's famous rock band "Millennium!". Stop by and cheer everyone on and enjoy a great day in Coronado. For more information, call the Event Hotline at (760) 736-3548.CODE AMBER :
A few weeks ago, I added the Code Amber Alert ticker to the Links page of the ombudsman website. This ticker automatically displays Amber Alerts from around the country, alerting citizens that there is an abducted child who is in danger and needs your help. You can get a free ticker for your computer desktop, or receive alerts by email. I also receive a periodic newsletter from Code Amber with tips on keeping my kids safe. This month, they are offering a great Safety Net video with tips for kids 4 - 11 on recognizing and avoiding dangerous strangers, what to do if a stranger comes to the door or calls if your child is home alone, and more. If you're a parent or there's a child in your life that you care about - and the video of the February abduction of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia sent chills up and down your spine as you watched her eventual murderer lead her away on that surveillance tape - this video is for you. Click here for details. This information is for personal use and information only. Code Amber and the Safety Net video are not expressly endorsed by the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard receives no financial benefit from the sale of this video or donations to Code Amber.org.ALL MILITARY GARAGE SALE:
Just in time for transfer season - it's the annual All-Military Garage Sale, to be held on Saturday, June 12, in the Murphy Canyon Chapel parking lot on Santo Road. It's going to be huge! Register by June 8 to clear out clutter from your closets, locate your lawn mower in your garage, or lighten the load for a move. Cost is $15 per stall or two for $25, and you must register by June 8. For more information, call (619) 435-8897. All proceeds benefit the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. For a full list of MWR activities this week, click here.MILITARY WIVES.COM:
