Site Summary:At his web site, David Annal defines tessellations as: "pictures or tiles, mostly in the form of animals and other life forms, which cover the surface of a plane in a symmetrical way without overlapping or leaving gaps." The definition is good but bears some explanation, which is provided in abundance.
M.C. Escher is a well-known artist, but here I learned that Escher is also known as the 'Father' of modern tessellations. I enjoyed learning that he was inspired by tile patterns created by the Moors in 14th century Spain. Escher had a lifelong fascination with drawing tessellations. By the time of his death, he had produced 137 examples. There are three galleries of Escher's work, four galleries of David's creations, and if a visitor is inspired to create one, there's a guest gallery, too. The section called "Do It Yourself" contains step-by-step instructions detailing the basics, and how to proceed from there. Why I Like It:
I love finding patterns and symmetry in life, so it is even better discovering this concept represented in art.
Not only did I learn about an art form that was previously unknown to me, I enjoyed discovering the steps and theories behind its creation. There is a lot of information on these pages - more than I can reasonably share here - so give Tessellations a visit. David has put together a site that is interesting, easy to navigate, loads quickly, and educates while it entertains. Even his use of frames is not a drawback. As far as I could see, everything works and it works beautifully. If you go by his site, tell David that Paisley Blue sent ya! |
