LeFt Eye: Is the L from TLC. She was born in Philadelphia on May 27, 1971, with a creative talent, which was discovered when she got a toy piano when she was little, and she started composing real songs on it. She was always very creative, when she used to draw cartoon "just for the fun of it."
In 1991, she moved to Atlanta and met Tionne "T-boz" Watkins, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. They quickly became best friends and started TLC and got signed on to LaFace Records. Sadly, the same day that Lisa got a record deal, her father was killed. "It was the happiest day of my life, but the sadest evening of my life," Lisa quoted.
In 1994, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes had a violent relationship with her boyfriend Andre Rison. He hit her a few times and threw her to the floor. Lisa had caught him with another woman. She then decided to burn the teddy bears she had given him, so she put them in the marble covered tub and set them on fire. The flames did not spread. Some little time later, they had another fight, in which Left Eye kept slapping him. She then stumbled upon 20 pairs of sneakers in his house, so she decided to burn them too. But this time, the tub was covered with fiberglass instead of marble, and when she set them on fire, the flames spread and the house burned down. Left Eye did not go to jail, but she got 5 years probation.
In 1999, internal TLC fights had been starting. Left Eye quoted "I have graduated from this era. I cannot stand 100% behind this TLC project." She was talking about the new album FAN*MAIL which came out in 1999. Left Eye kept working on her solo album all through 2000 and 2001, and for some reason did not attend T-boz's wedding. She kept saying on her forum that no matter how many rumers there were passed that TLC was gonna break up, she still had love for her group.
Around 1999 and 2000, Left Eye was again going out with Andre Rison. Then they broke up, and just decided to be friends. He is featured on Left Eye's song "Rags to Riches" on her solo album, Supernova.
On April 25, 2002, Lisa was driving in her rented SUV in Honduras with 7 other people when she saw a stopped car on the road. She tried to swerve around it, but her SUV fell into a ditch, landing upside-down. Lisa was flung out of the SUV,and died instantly from a blow to the head. She will be greatly missed.
Her first solo album, Supernova, was released after her death in the USA, it was already released a year before only overseas because of some problems Left Eye had with Arista records, about them not paying her for the completion of the album. If you listen to this album, you can really get to know the real Left Eye. Her lyrics are about her life, her feelings, and they are also inspirational.
She later was working on her second solo album "N.I.N.A." (No Identity Non Applicable) with another record label she signed onto, because of the conflicts with Arista. She died, not finishing it, so her family finished it for her, and it is now out.
Left Eye also brought Blaque into the music buisness. They are featured for her solo song on Supernova "Head to the sky" and Left Eye is featured for their song "I do."
Lisa was also very intelligent, if you listen to her music, you can tell that she understands a lot, and has a great level of vocabulary. One word to describe her solo music would be spiritual. One word to descibe her music with TLC would be down-to-earth.
On her official website (which USED to exist),
www.eyenetics.net, she personally answered her advice column, tell me, how many other artists do that?? None that I can think of. She was an amazing person!
T-boz, Chilli, Left Eye's family, many friends, and fans will miss her greatly, but hey, she's still alive in all of our hearts!
