University of Pittsburg chess archives. Huge, and lots of chess games and software available. Seems to be going unmaintained. The chess software available here is quite old. However, the game collection is superb.

The Exeter Chess club. A huge Chess resource. Houses a Lot of chess tutorials, games, and problems. It is also possible to download it all from their ftp as a 19Mb (Duh!) file.

Crafty is the strongest freeware chess program available. It is compatible with winboard/Xboard. It was written by Dr. Hyatt. Both the program and its source code are available at Dr. Hyatt's homepage.

Phalanx is a chess engine written by Dusan Dobes. It is tactically very strong, but lacks somewhat in positional play. Phalanx is free & source code is available.
