Where is Your Heart?
Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Luke 12:34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
These two verses are well known. They are memorized by children and adults and are often quoted. However, I feel very seldom to we take the time to really observe what these verses are saying to us. There is a deep, terrifying truth within these verses that is often missed.
"For where your treasure is."
First, ask yourself where your treasure lies. Is it in things? In attention and affection? In money? In a person? In a talent? In a certain feeling? Where is your treasure? Please take time this second to decide where your treasure is. Don't fool yourself; be honest because this is the first step in truly understanding these verses.
"There will your heart be also."
Have you picked your treasure? The reason your treasure is so important is because that is where you heart is! If your treasures are things, that's where your heart is. If your treasure is in attention and affection, that's where your heart is. Perhaps your treasure lies in a special person or talent or feeling, that's where your heart is. And, if your treasure is in any of these things, you are in serious trouble!
The trouble with our hearts is that they are supposed to be finding treasures in Heaven. Our treasures are supposed to be stored up in our final home. Why?
1.) It's a lasting treasure
In Heaven our treasure won't rust. It won't grow old and break. It won't become less valuable with time and wear. In Heaven our treasure cannot be taken away. On earth our treasures are stolen by thieves. Our treasures are burned in fires, lost if floods, swept away in tornadoes, ruined in earthquakes. Don't waste your time making earthly things treasures. They won't last. If earthly things are your treasure, your heart will be broken several times.
2.) It affects your heart
If your treasure is in Heaven, your heart will be safe! If your treasure is here on earth, be prepared for broken hearts! The verse doesn't say, "Where your treasure is your heart might also be." It says there your heart is! Like it or not, what you treasure, what is important to you, will affect your heart in a serious way.
3.) It affects your walk with God
If you heart is not safely in God's loving hands, not only are you in danger of being hurt, but also of having a shallow walk with God! When your heart is invested in other treasures, it is not available for God.
