It was getting late when Eric finally pulled away from Greta on the couch. "It's getting late, we should get some sleep" he said. She snuggled up against him. "Where are you sleeping?" she asked, surprised at herself after it left her mouth. "Right here" he said, patting the couch. "Eric, are you sure?" she asked, hoping he was teasing. "Yeah, it's comfortable" he said. He hopped up off the couch and went into the closet, producing a blanket and a pillow. She stood up slowly. "Well, ok..." she said, a little disappointed. He kissed her on the cheek. "Have a good night" he said. She smiled a little smile and went to her room. *Why doesn't he want to share the bed with me?* she thought to herself. *I'm sure he's just trying to be polite but it's not what I want at all* She sighed and changed into a pair of silk pajamas. She climbed into the huge bed. *Well, there's certainly room for two* she thought to herself. A cool breeze blew in the open window and she pulled the sheets up higher and closed her eyes. She was awakened later by a loud noise coming from outside her room. She sat up and listened again-it sounded like an animal. *Calm down, you're in the woods, of course there are animals* she said to herself, lying back again. The noise came again, this time louder and she sat straight up. She pushed back the sheets and went to look out the window. She peeked around the edge and saw the bushes underneath her window moving around. With a shriek, she turned and started to run out of the room. She threw the door open with a bang and jumped on the couch onto an unsuspecting, sleeping Eric. "Greta? What's wrong?" he asked, putting his arms around her even though she was already hanging on him. "There's something outside my window" she said, her voice muffled by his undershirt. "What?" he asked, smiling to himself. She pulled away to look at him. "There's an animal outside my room" she said, quietly. "Greta, there are lots of animals but they can't get to you" he said, trying hard not to laugh. "But Eric!" she started and he saw it was a losing battle. "Ok, we'll go look, ok?" he said, getting up. He pulled her to her feet and got a flashlight from the closet. He started into her room with her trailing behind, holding his hand. He started to walk around her bed and swore to himself as he tripped over her shoes at the foot of the bed. "Sorry" she whispered. He led her to the wall and then turned the flashlight on. He started to look outside and she hid her face in the back of his shirt. "There it is!" he suddenly said. "What? What is it?" she asked, as he turned to her, his eyes shining. "Trees" he said. "And rocks...and there's a lake over the hill". "What?" she asked, confused. "There's nothing there' he said. "You must have scared it off with your yell earlier". "Oh..." she said, now starting to feel stupid. Eric shut the window and locked it for her. "Now get your pretty little head back in bed cause we have a big day tomorrow" he said, leading her back to the bed. "Is the couch comfortable?" she asked, quietly following him. "Yeah, it's fine" he said. She sat down on the edge of the bed, still holding his hand. He turned to leave but she held fast to his hand. "Are you sleeping ok out there?" she asked. "Greta, I'm fine...get some sleep" he said. Frustrated, she put her head down. "Eric..." she started. "Yeah?" he said, quietly. He wanted to stay with her but didn't want to rush her so he wanted her to be the one to ask. "Eric, will you..." she started and then finally spit it out. "Eric, please stay here with me" "Are you sure you want me to?" he asked, a smile forming on his lips. "Yeah, I'm sure" she said, her head still down. "Greta, I'd love to" he said, climbing up on the big bed next to her. She smiled and slid under the sheets. But he was still playing with her and laid at the far end of the bed from her. She sighed and closed her eyes to sleep. But an animal howled outside and she jumped on top of him. "Now, this is better" he said, with a smile. "What are you talking about?" she asked. "I was just playing, of course I want you here in my arms" he said, pulling her closer. "Eric!" she said, pretending to be mad. But he just gave her a mischevious little grin and she laughed. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him hard, taking him surprise. When she finally pulled away, he looked at her surprised. "What?" she finally asked. "Feel free to do that whenever you feel like it" he said, with a laugh. She laughed and pulled away and he rolled on top of her, kissing her. After a minute he pulled away again. "We really need to get some sleep for tomorrow" "What's tomorrow?" she asked, lying next to him with her head on his chest. He wrapped his arms around her and she put her one leg over his. "It's a surprise" he said. "Another surprise?" she asked. He nodded and kissed the top of her head. "You'll like it" he said. "I don't like surprises" she said. "You liked this one" "True" she agreed. "I guess when it concerns you, I like surprises". He laughed and started to close his eyes. "Eric?" she said, interrupting him. "Hmm?" he asked. "Are you asleep?" she asked. "Well, not now" he said, jokingly. She elbowed him on the side. "I'm kidding...so what did you need to say?" "Well, I wanted to know...will you stay here again with me tomorrow night?" she finally said. "I'll have to think about it" he said. He heard her gasp like she was upset and he laughed. "I'm kidding...I'd be honored to". She looked up at him and he kissed her once more. "Good night Eric" she said, setting her head down again. "Night, love" he said. "Sweet dreams" "You too" she said, her eyes closing and she quickly fell asleep, finally safe in his arms. |
