"Me and Philip? What about us?" she said. "And why do you want to know?" "Cause you're both good friends of mine and..." he started, and then looked at the confused look on her face. "Well, I know he can be a jerk sometime and I don't want to see you get hurt". "Me get hurt? By Philip? I'm missing something here," Belle said. "Oh, c'mon, you know how he feels about you" Shawn said. Belle just stared at him. "You know he has thing for you". "No way, we're just friends" Belle said. "He thinks there could be more than that," Shawn said. "Well, there's not" Belle said, bluntly. Shawn looked up at her, surprised. "Impressive" he said. "Belle Black grew a backbone. Ready to give me a hand here, soldier?" She laughed at him. "Yessir" she said, standing up. "Ooo, I like that" he said, with a grin. "Say it again". Belle walked over and smacked him on the butt. "Or you coulld just hit me again" he said, sticking out his butt. "Shawn!" Belle yelled. "I'm just kidding, calm down" he said. "You can go ahead and start cutting up those veggies for me". Belle cleaned off a tomato and began to cut it as Shawn started to fry up the chicken. "Are you done talking? Cause I'd still like to have a conversation here". "Why do you make such a big deal out of us talking?" Belle asked. "Cause I like having conversations with little old you" Shawn said, flipping the chicken. "Little?!?" Belle asked, holding her knife up to him. "Whoa, just a phrase, put the knife down" he said, holding up his hands. Belle laughed and Shawn turned back to his cooking. He absent-mindedly began to whistle to himself as he turned the chicken. Belle barely listened as she picked up the green peppers and onions she had just cut up and took them over to Shawn. "Thanks" he said, taking them and adding them to another pan. Belle reached over the stove for a towel and some grease from the chicken jumped out and caught her on the arm. "Ouch!" she yelled. Shawn turned to her. "What happened?" he asked. "I was reaching for a towel when the chicken grease burned me" she said, looking at her arm. "Here, put it under water" Shawn said, grabbing her and holding her arm under the sink. He turned the water on cold and let it run over her arm for a few minutes. "Better?" he asked. Belle nodded and looked at her arm, which was still red. "It doesn't hurt real bad but it's a little sore" she said, rubbing her arm. Shawn gently ran his finger down the side of it and goosbumps ran up her arm at his gentle touch. "Smells great up here!" they heard Eric yell as he came jogging up the stairs with Greta. "Is it almost ready?" "Just a few more minutes" Shawn said, turning back to the chicken. Belle began to put everything in bowls on the bar as Eric and Greta set the table. The others came in, sniffing the air hungrily. Shawn set down the last dish of rice as everyone began to assemble their tortillas. Belle and Shawn watched, hot and tired, until everyone was done and then they made theirs. Everyone at in relative silence, except to compliment the two on their cooking. "What's for dessert?" Bo joked. Shawn glared at him. "Kidding" he said. "You kids go relax, we'll do the dishes. Thanks again, you two". Everyone got up and started to clean the table off. Shawn stayed in his seat and Belle hopped up and went downstairs to check her e-mail. He listened to the adults for some time but was bored by their talk. He went to see what Eric was doing but found that him and Greta were in Eric's room with the door shut. So he went downstairs and let himself in the TV room. Belle was typing away at the computer when he came in and threw himself down on the couch. "Shawn Brady, you could make a living out of being lazy," she said, looking over at him. "I know, and it'd be awesome" he said, rolling over. Belle went back to her typing and Shawn watched for a minute and then got up to look over her shoulder. "Whatcha doing?" he asked. "Mimi e-mailed me and said that our grades are on the Internet" she said. "So I'm looking" "But I thought we would get them in the mail" Shawn said. "Like, we would get home and they would be waiting in our mailboxes". "They will be" Belle said. "But you can get them ahead of time on here". Shawn watched as she typed in her name and her social security number. The screen went blank for a minute and then they popped up on the screen. "Let's see, Belle Black" Shawn said, reading over her shoulder. "English A+. History A. Trig. B-. French A-. Gym B+. Physics B. Perfect as always, dear". "I don't know, could be better" she said, as she hit the print button. The printer came to life and quickly printed out her grades. "Wanna check yours?" "Only if you don't laugh," Shawn mumbled, as Belle got up to let him sit down. "I promise" Belle said. He typed in his name and his number and his grades were soon up on the screen. Belle peeked over his shoulder. "Shawn Douglas Brady" she said. "English A-. History A+. Trig. A-. Gym A+. Physics A. Music A+. These are good, Shawn!" Belle reached over his shoulder and hit the print button for him. "C'mon, I'm going to go show my parents" she said, grabbing him. Shawn took his grades and shoved them in his back pocket as they went up the stairs. Their parents were all sitting at the table, drinking coffee. "Mom, Dad, I got my grades" she said, walking over to them. She handed them to her mom and John looked over Marlena's shoulder. "These are great, sweetie, I'm so proud of you" Marlena said, putting her arm around Belle. "Thanks, Mom" Belle said. Hope looked at Shawn expectantly. "Did you get yours?" she asked him. Shawn pulled them from his pocket and handed them over, reluctantly. His parents read them together. "These are good, Shawn" Hope said, sounding surprised. "Yeah, I thought you said you were struggling in History and English" Bo said. "These grades don't show that you were" "Chloe helped me with Trig" he said, shoving his hands in his pockets. "And Belle helped me some". Hope handed the paper to Marlena, who smiled up at Shawn. "I'm not surprised, Shawn is a bright kid" she said. Shawn blushed. "I'm gonna go outside" he said, turning and booking it to the porch. Hope looked over the paper again. "Well, Belle, whatever you did to help him, thank you" Bo said. "No problem, I was happy to help," she answered. "I don't understand why Shawn D was so reluctant to show us his grades" Hope said. "I mean considering all he's gon through, with us being apart and the whole Princess Gina thing. I would think he would be proud of doing well through all of it" "I don't know, Fancy Face" Bo answered her. "I'm afraid he hasn't adjusted well to all of it" Hope said. "Marlena, what do you think?" Marlena went to answer and Belle slipped away, not interested in what they were going to talk about. She went to her room and sat on her bed. She remembered that Shawn was outside so she grabbed a zip-up sweatshirt and slid into some sandals. She went back to the dining room, where Mrs. Horton had joined them. Belle slipped up to her and leaned over to whisper. "Is Shawn still outside?" she whispered. "Yes, dear, I think he's out there with Eric and Greta" she answered. "Thanks" Belle said, slipping out the door.
