This month, I am publishing extracts from an article by the famous Tamil writer Sujatha.
'Limericks are quite popular in English. Their origin is attributed to Edward Lear.
Generally they have five lines with the last words of the first, second and fifth lines rhyming.
Third and fourth lines have their own metre Limericks are always on humourous topics. The most common limerick, which is
quoted as a model in English is
There was an old lady of Riga
Who went for a ride on a tiger
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside
And a smile on the face of the tiger
That these are also possible in Tamil was proved by Poet Chearan' father, who wrote.
