"Why do I go to Bustamante?"
My family and I have been going down to Busty since the 1950's.
Grandpa Pedro Rodriguez was born in Candela, Tamaulipas which is
about 20+ miles north of Bustamante. My grandfather was visiting
a friend in Monterrey when he became ill and had to be
hospitalized in Monterrey, N.L. This is where my grandfather met
Maria who was a companion of the friend he was visiting. While
my folks were visiting grandpa, they met Maria Zamora. Maria over-
heard my folks explain to the doctor the traveling they had to do
coming down from San Antonio. This is when Maria offered to put
them up in Bustamante. From that time my family visited Bustamante
every two weeks in August for the fiesta. Back then the roads were
not paved all the way, so travel was very slow. Today, the roads
leading out of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico are well paved. Of all my family
members, I am the one that still keeps a strong tie with Bustamante
and the community.
