The caves of
Bustamante are a wonderful natural spectacle; they are also known as El Palmito
caves, located in the Sierra de Gomas. To get to these caves, a 6-kms long trail
must be taken. Its entrance is about 350 meters above the lowest part of the
canyon and approximately 500 meters above sea level. The corridors in the caves
go down 225 meters, which makes them the largest caves in the north of Mexico.
The best known part of the caves is made up of two large chambers, one near the
entrance, measuring more than 100 meters wide, 200 meters long and 20 meters
high. The other chamber is 100 meters long, 600 meters wide and 30 meters high.
This last chamber is compared in size and magnitude to the sister caves of
Carsbald in New Mexico. The interior is made up of several chambers with
stalactite and stalagmite formations. Around 5 kilometers have been explored,
although the visitors’ trail is just 3 kilometers long, with a tour guide
requested in the town’s presidency.
