Mandu'lote Runya, or Runya, never knew his parents. Or rather, his biological parents. Runya remembered his foster parents without much love. They were a hard, emotionless couple, even for elves and Runya always had the impression that they wish they hadn't found him.
But, that was all in the past. Runya ran away before he was considered an adult, even though his foster parents would never treat him such. He supposed that running away was an impetuous thing to do, but he just had to get away from people who would rather sell him than spend another minute with him.
It was after Runya ran away that he found his calling in life. He had always enjoyed the forest, like any elf, but his pleasure ran much deeper than just the forest. He loved every aspect of nature. The whole cycle. From birth to death to birth again. Runya felt apart of nature.
This love led him to not only become more aware of the natural world, but to defend it and become more apart of it then his kind is naturally.
His mentor walked over by Runya-wolf's side. "You have done well, my apprentice. You have mastered the wolf form." The human lowered his hand and placed it on the wolf's head. "You have completed half the ritual, my son. Return to your previous shape. We shall conclude at the eve of tomorrow."
Runya inhaled a breath as a wolf, and when he exhaled, he was elf again. When Runya breathed in again, he almost choked. He was still smelling the acrid odor of human sweat! He turned to ask his mentor what was going on, but he was gone. Maybe this was one of the gifts that his mentor promised. Runya sure hoped so. He had payed nearly everything he owned just so he would be taught. Runya was in the same spot the next evening just as the sun touched the horizon, clouds turning marvelous shades of orange and pink. Runya grinned from pointy ear to pointy ear. With a clearing of a throat behind him, Runya was back to all business. His mentor pointed to a flapping shape up in the sky, a bat.
Without anywords, Runya concentrated, and his world changed. He was able to navigate and land, awkwardly in his mentor's outstretched hand. His mentor placed his now huge hand on Runya-bat's head. "Now, the ritual is complete. You are now a skin changer my son. Change back and lead a tired, old man home."
Runya didn't need to hear that back. He shifted back and hugged his mentor. He took his mentor's hand and turned to the forest. The forest seemed different now. He could not only see the forest, but he could detect the animals, plants, and insects that were just beyond his sight. It was like he was seeing them, but not with his eyes. Runya smiled again. Being a druid was a dream come true.
