How To Get Started In Stained Glass

Since my page has been up, one main question keeps popping up, How do I get started in stained glass? I do have some information in the tip area, but to make it simpler, I'll put the information here. I'll put down what I've been saying to everyone. I'm also providing some links to phone books and maps to help in your quest.

Stained glass is getting more popular every year. More and more stores are opening up selling supplies and sometimes teaching. If you have a stained glass store near you call them up. Ask them if they teach. If they sell supplies, all the better. Often they go together. The store first teaches you the art of stained glass, then sells you the supplies.

If you don't know of a stained glass store, go to your local yellow pages (or whatever color they use in other countries). Look for the following names:

GLASS
GLASS LEADED, STAINED
STAINED GLASS
STAINED GLASS SUPPLY

Usually it's under Glass Leaded, Stained. The ad may say they sell supplies. It's best to call first. It's a good idea to have a few stores you can go to in case you need to.

Another place is night school. The local school will sometimes send out little booklets of the classes they teach.

Or you might have a friend in the business that can teach you.

Then there are always books and videos. Vicky Payne has a TV show that teaches different aspects of stained glass. She also sells books and videos. I've never seen the videos myself, but the TV shows are pretty good. It's easier to learn something by watching, and not by reading. When you read you can't here the sound of the glass cutter. When you cut the glass it makes a scratching sound, which you can't hear in a book. Nor can you see the hand rolling motion it takes to break the glass. People can learn from videotapes, but they still have to locate a supply store.

There are several places on the net where they give you a general overview of the steps (I'll list the links below). My page mainly provides tips for those who already do stained glass.

GTE Super Pages

Infospace Reverse Look Up - This will bring you right to the reverse search. Not necessarily stained glass useful, but it's pretty cool anyway.
ThinkDM 911 - This also has a reverse number search.

MAP SITE'S ONLINE: so you know how to get to the new store you just found:
MapBlast
Maps on Us - You'll need to sign up with this one to enter. Mainly it needs to know where you are in relation to your destination. It has built in driving instructions. Very cool.
Infoseek Maps - This also has very good driving instructions.

All catalog sites can be found on my links page 1

Another note: be sure to stay away from craft stores to buy your stained glass supplies. Craft stores don't have a good variety. Also they tend to be much more expensive then a regular store that sells glass supplies.
