How do you...?

scroll

Here's a simple page on how to save graphics or images you come across on the Internet. Please keep in mind any copyright laws, and respect any requests that are asked of you from the owner of the graphic/image that you give credit to them somewhere on your page, link back to their page, or requests that you do not copy or use their image at all. If in doubt of a copyright somewhere on a site, check the source code for one.

For example, the backgrounds on my site that I created are not to be copied or used elsewhere (a 'do not use' situation)... but the Paris Community Leader WebRing graphic I made is available to be copied and used only for the webring (the 'catch'). Most 'free' graphics sites require that a credit and link back to their page be posted in return for your use of the designs.

After making sure that you have read the page for a "catch" to borrowing the graphic/image, and have followed the directions and respected their wishes, use your right mouse button and click over top of the graphic. Choose "Save image as..." and pick a directory ("Save in:") that will serve as a home to your graphic, until you can upload it to the GeoCities server (or your own server). Once you've done that, check that there is a name for the image in the field "File name:" . If there isn't, make up a short name that describes and identifies the image, and press the "save" button.

How to Save a graphic on a Mac

Saving on a Mac...
by John (CPCL), 7/14/97

To save something from the net all you need to do is click on the image and hold. A pull down menu will appear which includes "copy this image" (will copy the image to finder's clipboard) and "save this image as" (which will save the image).

Save images where ever you want: on your hard drive, a floppy disk, or where ever. The "save image as" will provide the same options for placement as any "save as" command on a Mac.

Thinking of simply using "http://www.theirserver.com/name/theirgraphic.ext" to avoid having to give someone credit for their work? Shame, double shame on you! Never, never ever think that using someone's graphic by linking to their server from your page is getting around the copyright issue, or "not really using" their image. What you are doing is stealing more than their graphics: you're stealing their bandwidth! What's more, if the person changes the name of their graphic, your page shows only broken images. So, in effect, you've just made yourself look like a dumb-dumb. Just make sure to check that the graphic is usable, always give credit, and you'll be able to keep your halo shiny.

If you still have questions, or are encountering problems, please get in touch with your nearest computer guru, Community Leader, or contact me personally, and I'll see what I can do to help solve your problem. Soon I'll have a page listing a few sites that offer free images for you to use on your homepage, high-quality graphic sites that actually want you to save their stuff and place it on the web.
