Agent Dana Katherine Scully is a medical doctor with an undergraduate degree in physics. She was recruited for the FBI right out of medical school, and had been teaching at the FBI Academy in Quantico. She was assigned to be Mulder's partner in order to keep an eye on him and to discover were his investigations are waste of time. She is sceptical of anything paranormal and believing that everything should have a logical scientifical-quantified explanation. Her family initially disapproved of her joining the Bureau but they learned to accept it.

Her father died early in 1994, he appeared to Scully in a vision just before she learned of his death. During that time, Mulder & Scully were investigating a claim by convicted murderer Luther Lee Boggs that he had information on a current kidnapping through physic channelling. During an interview with Boggs, Scully's father appeared to speak through Boggs, speaking things that Boggs that could not possibly have known. This event deeply disturbed Scully and forced her re-evaluate her opinions on the paranormal. When the x-files investigations were shut down, Scully returned to Quantico, teaching FBI cadets the basics of forensic medicine. even though they were no longer partners Mulder regularly called upon her assistance in conducting post mortems. Soon after that Scully was abducted by escaped mental patient Duane Barry and disappeared without a trace for three months. She finally mysteriously showed up at a Georgetown hospital in a coma. She recovered and is now back as Mulder's partner. Recently she discovered an implant in the back of her neck which she had removed that appeared to be an advanced tracking device. While investigating a case of murdered Japanese doctors she encounters a group of women who claim they have seen her before. All the women claim to have abducted by extra-terrestrials who performed tests on them while being watched by humans and all of them have had implants placed in the back of their necks. They recognise Scully as one of those who were abducted. They claim that the tests that were performed are slowly killing them and Scully will soon share their fate. Dana is a middle child, she has one older and one younger brother and an older sister, Melissa. During the search for the DAT tape by the Men-in-Black, she was warned by the Well-Manicured-Man that she was targeted for assassination. Unfortunately, the forces sent to kill her, shot Melissa instead, who later died in hospital.
