Dyslexia

" Shoot for the moon...even if you miss, you'll be among the "stars"
My little "stars" are my daughters, France and Roxanne.

"I Wish I Had A Pneumonia "
(A poem I wrote in March 97 for Roxy who tries so hard...You'll read one day Angel...)

My crying eyes are burning
I have difficulty learning.
I can't write, read or spell
And my feelings hurt as well.

They say I have Dyslexia
But I wish it was a pneumonia!
Lots of people don't understand,
That I only need a helping hand.

Looking at another flash card,
And working twice as hard,
You would be frustrated too,
If the letter "p" looked like a "q"!

Some kids in my class say I'm crazy,
And my teacher thinks I'm lazy.
Mom says that I am very bright
And that everything will be all right.

I am only six years old.
Excuse me if I seem bold,
I will be your future you know,
Don't you care how it will grow?

About Roxanne

The quote: " Shoot for the moon...even if you miss, you'll be among the "stars", was given to me for my daughter Roxanne.

After many fustrating hours of homework and tears, I found out a year ago that my daughter Roxy has dyslexia. My heart goes out to Roxy. She is now in grade 2 and still has difficulty reading. She has been teased at school and is branded as a stupid child by those who don't understand. Roxy has been tested and she has an above average IQ and has been ranked in the top 5% tile in intelligence for her age group. (Out of 100 children, Roxanne is ranked in the top 5 most intelligent kids.)

Last Summer, I hired a school teacher so she could help Roxy. It did help a bit but Roxy still struggles to achieve what other children take for granted. She sees a special teacher twice a week and works awfully hard. We encourage her and tell her often that we are proud of her.

When Bill Cosby said to the press, (after his son was murdered,) that his son was his hero, I felt like crying because I knew what he meant. Children who are dyslectic have this inner strength and determination to succeed. This should be an inspiration to all.

The National Instute of Health (USA) estimates that 15% of the population is dyslexic. Please read the following, it might help someone who like Roxanne was branded as stupid.

"It has become increasingly clear in recent years that dyslexics themselves are frequently endowed with high talents in many areas."

Norman Geschwind

What is dyslexia ?

Dyslexia is difficulty with the alphabet, reading, reading comprehension, writing, and spelling in spite of adequate or superior intelligence, conventional instruction, and social-cultural opportunity.

What causes dyslexia ?

Recent scientific research suggests that dyslexia may be caused by differences in the brain organization. Dyslexia also tends to run in families.

What can be done about dyslexia?

Because people with dyslexia learn differently, traditional instructional programs may not be appropriate. Unrecognized, dyslexia may lead to:

* frustration and stress
* illiteracy
* school drop-outs
* career limitations
*dependency

Specialized help allows individuals with dyslexia to:

* increase their self-esteem
* read and write to their full potential
* pursue their education
* increase their career opportunities
* develop their special talents

Symptoms of dyslexia

The symptoms of dyslexia vary widely from person to person. People with dyslexia may have trouble with one or more of the following:

* learning the alphabet
* learning to write
* perceiving letters (such as b-d and p-q)
* reading
* spelling
* telling time
* remembering multiplication tables
* following directions
* knowing left from right, east from west
* expressing ideas in writing
* finding the "right" word
* expressing their ideas clearly verbally

"However, we do believe that a number of traits associated with dyslexia and other learning difficulties (especially high visual-spatial talents) may tend to predispose some individuals to greater creativity than might exist otherwise."

Thomas G. West
