| The Rubens market, held on the
"Grote Markt" and on streets in its neighborhood, is one on which all
kinds of articles are sold, but mainly gifts for mother: Assumption
day is also 'Mothers' day ("Moederdag") in Antwerp (and far beyond too..) Thousands visit this folkloric
market. Why? |
 |
Well, merchants on the Rubens market are supposed to wear
clothes and hats as worn during the 17th century, when Rubens,
the painter, was one of Antwerp's most famous citizens. On that day, there's
a competition amongst merchants; several prizes are accorded by
the municipality to those who wore the nicest, the most typical outfits
on the 'Rubens market'. |
