You know, one of these days, I'm going to admit I am a sucker for romantic
comedies. I really do like the sappiness of them. It's almost enough to make you...
Anyway, I saw the Matchmaker last night. It stars Janeanne Garafalo, currently the most cynical woman in Hollywood.
I like her. She's a great actress, and should really be doing more of these roles.
The film's story goes something like this. Woman works for senator who's losing his election race, who sends her
off to ireland to find more of his clan for photoOp purposes. So off she goes, and lands herself right smack in
the middle of a Matchmaking festival. Now, I have no idea if these things actually exist, but this is what it is:
Desperate women and men from everywhere go to this teeny town called Baile Na'Gra (don't quote my irish spelling,
please!) and get set up for life. It's a sweet deal. However, Marcy Tizzard (Garafalo's character) isn't there
to find a sweetie. (but, as is the tradition with romantic comedies, she does anyway!)
The movie is very sweet. The plot is fairly predictable in the general sense, but with a few twists. Oh, and don't
worry, there are no running to meet each other at the airport scenes, I promise.
Her sweetie turns out to be Sean (David O'Hara), the man who left his job in Dublin to tend bar at his brother's
pub & inn. he's a cute guy, but he can't sing. Believe me, this man CANNOT sing. You might remember David from
the movie Braveheart, in which he played the crazy irishman named Stephen. (See also the God O' The Moment page).
I liked the movie, and recomend it as a girls night movie, or a movie to see with a sweetie of your own. (YUCK!
I have got to stop watching these romantic movies. I'm making myself ill.)
