Design

There are many things to consider when building your site. The first is the topic. What interests you? Pick something (or a few things if they can be related) and expand from that. Examples of this could be hockey, gardening, or a "you" page (all of your favorite things). The possibilites are endless.

Now that you know what you want to do, browse for sites with similar topics. Take note of any good ideas to incorporate into your site. You want to make your site stand out from the rest; make visitors remember it.

Next, decide on your target audience. If your site is about a pop star, you'd probably target teenagers or young adults. The opposite would be true if your site was about marriage; you'd want adults to look at it.

Finally, remember that regardless of your topic, your site is a reflection of yourself. Be proud of what you've done, whether it's coding one page or twenty :-)

Design Tips

  • Don't have a page full of nothing but links
  • Don't use "Under Construction" signs. Most sites are always being added to, this goes without saying
  • Don't overload your index page. If it takes too long to show up, a visitor will probably leave
