THE BECKY COLLECTION
THE SKATING RINK
©By Becky
We entered the building at about half past six
Be careful he said I hear that the door sticks
There was no problem the door felt so slack
Turning round to enter got slammed in the back
Oh great I thought this is just what I do need
Bought our tickets, then made a straight bead
To the window to rent our clunky inline skates
I hope I can still do this for all of our sakes
I use to skate in the streets way back when
I was so young, long ago, and also so thin
Struggling to get the boots to fit on my feet
The buckle was stuck I was sure for defeat
Then along came a man to snap it into place
"Thanks" I said, standing, fell flat on my face
My breath was knocked out of me so fast
I saw stars getting a good look into my past
Thought I was a goner, and suddenly breathed
I looked all around me, sat there and I seethed
Damn, why am I doing this I wondered out loud
That's when I saw a kid come out from the crowd
I remember, why I'm here, he stood by my side
The concern in his eyes, so blue, opened wide
Here's the reason, sweet little grandson of mine
Please give me a hand up, I'll soon be just fine
Then taking my hand he lead me out on the floor
There's where I ended up a dozen times or more
Then got the hang of it, I remembered just how
Much fun it had been, how much fun it was now
He finally let go of my hand, then went on ahead
To join his friends skating, while passing he said
Hey Sweetheart you can do it, my dad told me so
You skated for him when he was young, so long ago
I stopped and I thought of that place back in time
I could skate round the rink and stop on a dime
Oh my, I remember my son as just a small child
I would hold him so close to me and all the while
I'd spin round in circles he'd chuckle with glee
There would only be us two, my baby and me
And as he grew older together we would skate
Till he found a new girl, I was left at the gate
For awhile I would skate all alone I'd then whirl
I dipped and jumped and finished with a swirl
Skirt gathering round me, my skates would fly
I had no partner to skate with me I'd then sigh
So I gave it all up then, I had never gone back
Until fifteen years later my grandson did lack
A way to get to the rink and then I was stuck
So here I am once more and with my bad luck
Again I'll have no partner to skate with me now
Much to my surprise I turned round and oh! wow
My son standing behind me holding out his hand
My eyes tearing, him grinning, to beat the band
He took my hand, we then skated round the rink
He then grabbed my waist, as quick as a wink
He had me dancing again, and then for awhile
Bringing back memories of when he was a child
This was no child here, his arms holding me now
This was a man full grown with rhythm and how
We danced and danced soon clearing the floor
The applause started, the crowd asking for more
As round crystal balls turn reflecting the light
The rink was all twinkling as if fairies in flight
I looked in my boys eyes a reflection of mine
His eyes were shimmering, oh they did shine
My son never let go of me, he held me secure
I am so very proud of him so tall and mature
My body, my feet remembered old dances anew
We gave them a show and then we both threw
The crowd some kisses and took a few bows
We then left the floor and heard a few, wows!
My grandson met us as we came out of the rink
Grandma, knew you could do it, gave me a wink
Breathing rapidly I gave my son a hard punch
He had told me he had to go out to a lunch
With his boss, so could not arrange transport
For his son, then had ask me to be a good sport
And now it is all over I am so very glad to say
I am all jittery and laughing so happy and gay
Now have to get back home a meal to prepare
I have a special something with hubby to share
I then prepared a meal that was fit for a king
Cooking this meal I started to dance and to sing
Had to make this night really special for my date
He had missed out, poor old hubby can't skate
