French Kiss--1995

Meg Ryan, Kevin Kline, Jean Reno, Timothy Hutton

I consider this movie one of my favourite all time ever and ever romantic comedies. You will never hear me say that again.

This is an excellent film, not only for the plot, but because of the setting and especially the actors. It is a good romantic comedy because the comedy is (usually) subtle and the romance isn't the disgusting-for-human-consumption kind. It's a quirky film that I saw when it first came out three years ago, but when I saw it again tonight on tv, I knew I had to review it. Why? Because if you like romantic comedies, then you'll love this one. If you are adversed to mushy romance, you'll still like what this movie has to offer. Nice people, good plot, subtle humor. It's a gas.

The storyline is as follows. Kate (Ryan)hates to fly, so her fiance Charlie (Hutton) leaves to go to a Paris conference thing on his own and meets lovely Juliette, who he falls madly in love with and leaves Kate. So Kate, who's trying to become and ex-patriot and join our wonderful country of Canada, braves her fear to go win her man back. On the plane she meets Luc (not Luke, Luuuque),played by Kevin Kline, who she doesn't like, mainly because he's french and has poor personal hygene. Blah blah, yadda ya, he's trying to smuggle in a diamond necklace to sell for money in france, and he hides it with her. WHOOPS! All her stuff gets stolen, and he chases her whilst she chases him. Oh, you can bet your sweet cheeks that hilarity ensues.

You know all romantic comedies work out, so that's a gimmie. But you like this one because it's all so well done and well written and the smackerels of french thrown in here and there are smashing (interesting note: They don't translate the words to the subtitles exactly. It's really fun when you speak french and don't have to read the subtitles. Much more amusing. Meg Ryan (City of Angels, IQ)is adorable as usual, although I'm told she's trying to lose that image. She's a wonderful actress with nice hair. Kevin Kline (Dave) is on my list as one of the most entertaining actors alive. He plays an excellent frenchman, with a good accent, and his french isn't all that bad either. Which is ironic, because the french have an inate hate for Americans, of which Kline is one. Ahh, stardom crosses ALL borders. ("Shut up, you stupid yankee. You sound like an octopus with 7 tentacles up his ass."--that's my line.)

My advice, have a girl fest. Rent my two favourite romantic comedies of all time that I can remember at the moment, French Kiss and The MatchMaker.
