3 hours and 15 minutes for a movie where you already know the ending? Why bother? Becuase, if you don't you will be the only one on the planet who will haven't seen James Cameron's epic masterpeice. You know I wouldn't steer you wrong, brave the numb-butt syndrome and go see it. Twice. Three Times. As many times as you can afford!!!
By now, everyone knows the plot. Big Ship goes to see, boy meets girl, ship sinks, boy and girl lose each other. But that's not the point. Sure, Leo DiCaprio dies YET AGAIN, but the love story is secondary to the point I think James Cameron was trying to make. The love story is good, I admit it. But that's only partially what keeps you involved.
Masses of people dying just don't affect the younger generation anymore. We've seen enough death on television to not care. But Cameron focuses in on more than 1500 people freezing to death in the North Atlantic. He focuses on Jack and Rose, yes, but also on the Captain, Thomas Andrews (Titanic Designer), the old couple in the bed, the irish mother in steerage telling her children faery tales as the ship sinks. It's the fact that THIS REALLY HAPPENED that is supposed to make you think about just who you are as a member of this race.
The reasons that Titanic left so unprepared for her fate are many, and some of them are mentioned in the movie. The greed and lust for power of mankind was so great, so overwhelming that it took the lives of 1500 victims. The anger I felt at my own humanity was surprising. I knew that the tradgedy could have been avoided. That's what the movie said to me.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet give performances of lifetimes in this movie. They are every couple on the Titanic, who lost love when the ship sank. We are drawn into their story like moths to a flame, and although this means huge $$$ for Cameron et al, it also means the rebirth of the epic movie.
My advice, if you haven't already guessed, is to go see it as many times as your bank account will allow. Girls, bring kleenex, and guys....well, it wouldn't hurt if you had some handy as well.
