Growing Old in America

We've been married for forty-five years,
And I've watched love expand and shrink.
And oh, the changes I've seen in her!
But not the way you might think.

Once she liked blue,
Soft pastel blue,
Sky blue and sea blue and baby blue, too.
Once she liked blue,
Oh, how she liked blue!
But now she loves red,
Bright, flaming red,
Ruby and scarlet and crimson instead---
Now she loves red,
Bright flaming red.

Growing old in America,
Growing old in style;
Growing old in America,
Getting younger all the while.

Once she would smoke,
Oh, how she'd smoke!
Till she discovered from well informed folk
One shouldn't smoke,
One never should smoke.
So now she gets thrills,
All kinds of thrills,
From diet and sleeping and stay awake pills---
Now she takes pills,
Beautiful pills.

Growing old in America,
Growing old in style;
Growing old in America,
Getting younger all the while.

Once she was plump,
Pudgy and plump,
Never would walk but would kinda go clump---
Once she was plump
And had a big rump.
But now she is slim,
Really quite slim.
Firms up and shapes up three days at the gym.
Face may be grim,
But body is slim.

Growing old in America,
Growing old in style;
Growing old in America,
Getting younger all the while.
