Kenny Loved Cars

On Christmas Day when he was four,
Kenny learned what it was like to soar---
He thought his little heart would burst
As his eyes became starry
When he was given his first
Matchbox Ferrari.

Kenny loved cars,
All sorts of cars,
Dodges and Chevys and Fords---
Kenny loved cars,
All sorts of cars,
Morgans and Tuckers and Cords.

Kenny watched cars,
All sorts of cars,
No matter the place we might be---
Kenny watched cars,
All sorts of cars
Much more than he
Had ever watched me.

I could tell that he was gone for good
The day he looked under a Rolls Royce hood.
He would get all touchy-feely,
Not inside me---
Inside an Austin-Healey.
And I truly felt my heart go crash
When I saw how he eyed a '56 Nash.

I could never measure up,
Neither sooner nor later,
To an old fan belt or a carburetor.
Thus our love was never to be---
Since Kenny loved cars,
All sorts of cars,
Much more than he
Could ever love me.
