Monkey Bars
From my eleventh floor apartment
on Sutton Place
There's a playground cross
the street that I can see,
And when a certain paunchy
gent
Reminds me how much he
has spent,
I go to the window,
Look down at the playground
And agree.
There was a boy
On the playground
Of P.S. 104---
Oh, what a handsome, inscrutable
fella!
I never screamed at him
When he'd take giant steps
While all the others were
taking "umbrella".
Many was the time he let
the see-saw fall,
Then he'd stand and giggle
as I hobbled;
Still I made sure I chose
him best of all
Even when his living statue
wobbled.
Oh, it was love
On the playground
Of P.S. 104---
And every swing there had
suddenly brightened;
And then he dared me climb
up
On the monkey bars,
And I was too frightened
to tell him "I'm frightened."
So I shut my eyes
And climbed and climbed
And climbed and climbed
And climbed and climbed
Praying he would like me
more---

He left me bleeding
On the playground
Of P. S. 104.
I tried again
On the playground
Of P.S. 104---
I chose a friendly and
commonplace fella;
He never screamed at me
When I'd take giant steps
While all the others were
taking "umbrella".
Once I even went and let
the seesaw fall,
Then I felt so guilty 'cause
I giggled
That I made sure I often
chose him best of all
Even when his living statue
wiggled.
Soon it was love
On the playground
Of P.S. 104
(Though every swing hadn't
quite the same brightness),
And then he begged me
Climb up on the monkey
bars,
And I said yes out of love
and politeness.
So I shut my eyes
And climbed and climbed
And climbed and climbed
And climbed and climbed
Knowing he would like me
more---

In my eleventh floor apartment
on Sutton Place
I don't have to be concerned
about the price;
I've a chair that's Florentine
And a chauffeured limousine
And I've been around the
world once or twice.
