How Valentine’s Day
Really came to be---
There are certain ancient traditions,
But they’re merely suppositions---
So you’ll just have to take it from me.

Whoever thought up Valentine’s Day
Must have had you in mind---
They must have had a feel
For your very rare appeal
When the first Valentine was designed.
They must have seen the image that I see---
Both the outer and the inner---
They must have felt your spell---
That magical spell---
Whether they were
Christian or pagan
Or saint or sinner.
Whoever thought up Valentine’s Day
Must have had you in mind---
They must have had a clue
That someday someone like you
Would be the ideal the world would find.
So God bless whoever discovered
Such a thing as a Valentine--
And God bless the fact
That this Valentine
