Where's That Angel?

Grandma told me when I was three
That there was an angel just for me,
So I'd imagine angels round my bed---
Then a few years later Grandma dropped dead.

Life isn't easier
As I grow older---
Where's that angel
Who should be sitting on my shoulder?

Angels are comforting,
Helpful and healing---
So where's that angel
Who should be dancing on my ceiling?

Something paltry this way comes
And leaves a wreck in its wake---
All my life I've been getting crumbs---
Now I want the whole cake!

Angel, angel,
Where have you gone
When wintry winds become colder?
Angel, angel,
You're thither and yon
When you should be sitting on my shoulder.
