The Wrong Button

Strange are the ways of a broken romance---
What is now dark was once light;
They say that nothing happens by chance
And I’m beginning to think that they’re right.

I pressed the wrong button
On my cellular phone
And I heard his voice again---
A simple "hello",
And I started to tremble,
And I didn’t know what to do then.

So many questions,
So many impressions
Whirled about in my brain---
The past flashed before me
Like a speeded-up film
With all the old pleasure and pain.

I pressed the wrong button
On my cellular phone
And “hello” was all he said---
Another "hello"
And still I said nothing
And the line went suddenly dead.

A simple response I could not afford
For love seldom ages like wine;
But why do I still keep his number stored,
And does he also keep mine?
Does he also keep mine?
