This is the method I used to blur the edge of all my photos and pictures in my homepage. It's quite a simple technique using:
- the select tool, - feathering and - cropping. |
Step 1:
Open up your image. Make sure the colour depth is set at 16 millions colours. If it isn't, click on "colours - increase colour depth - 16 million colours". Only the background colour is important here so select the colour which you want your picture to be blurred with. In this example, I used black as my background colour. |

Step 2:
Using the selection tool, set the selection type to "rectangle" and enter a feather value of 10 pixels. This will increase the area you want by 10 pixels in every direction. The value for feathering is the size of the area which will be blurred. So if you want a large area for the picture to fade out, enter a higher value. The maximum value for the selection tool is 20 pixels. But you can still increase the selection by clicking "selections - modify - feather". The maximum value for this function is 200 pixels but you can use this function as many times as you like. |

Step 3:
Now you are ready to crop the image. Select "image - crop to selection". This will produce an image like the one below. |

This method can also be used to combine pictures into a collage. |
